Paint on bedliner. Not cheap but if you have other uses for it then not bad. Good for coating the bottom of canvas bags for waterproofing. Lots of applications. I like the idea of oil based paint and sand though. Nice and cheap alternative.
 
Paint the handles and they will eventually rot. Take the gloves off for the little bit of wheel barrow time. Your hands will get used to it...

Probably depends on storage...I could see it lasting a long time in a dry location. Humid/outdoor storage...not so much. Wood is pretty hydroscopic and the paint would trap the wicked moisture inside and cause rot.
