Well I wasn't going to go out this morning, winds of up to 90 km (60 mph) were being predicted, along with the accompanying rains and 'brisk' late November temperatures. However, I felt compelled to go, as the city employee who has been setting up my logs for me for the past few years is retiring and tomorrow is his last day. So it was my last chance to see him and thank him for all his great help. Hopefully his replacement will be as accommodating!

And it started out not so bad really. Windy but not raining, yet. A short piece of oak on the left and an elm on the right. There were thirteen freighters bobbing up and down in the harbour, along with hundreds (thousands?) of birds also bobbing away.

By the time I made the first cut on each of them the weather was starting to close in.

I really like the look of the fresh cut oak, the dark brown is very appealing even though this one has some cracks and staining. I know that the brown will lighten considerably as it dries.

I took three slabs of the oak, and only one of the elm. The elm had been sitting on the beach for a while and it was stained in kind of an unattractive way. I got out of there just as the skies were starting to open up!

So not a lot wood cut, but nice to have the chance to say goodbye to Derek. Apparently he has been doing the same job since 1973!

A bit of a contrast to our weather. Today it was 101º (first day over 100 for this season and it's still not summer) and some 40 mph winds whipped up a controlled burn on the south west coast and took out 30 buildings. Fortunately no one was hurt.

Sorry to hear about the fires, hope that this year is better for you than last year.

Today it was 101º

The hottest day ever recorded in Vancouver was 33.8 degrees, which I believe converts to 86 degrees F. As a lifelong Vancouver resident I now understand why I hate it when the temp gets much over 75 degrees F!
