How well do solid nose bars (W/O roller tip) work for you chainsaw
mills? I have been using the roller tip, but this forces me to set up
the mill about.3-4" short of what I could with out the roller.

Other than milling, why would one use a solid tip?

I'm not arguing woith you Ben; what you say is very correct.

I just can't help thinking of hard nosed bars as relics of the past era of slower chain speeds. It just grits on me thinking of all those molecules bumping into one another from getting heated, all the chain streching, and chain chassis wear.

Tony, I have no use for them myself. The only time I have seen them is on saws used by the railroad. Interestingly these guys dont use carbide chain for cutting ties and such. They simply toss the chain after it gets dull. I got a freind that saved some for me. carolton semi chisel. Not that fastest chain, but I wont complain as there free.

Solid nose

Solid nose designed to work with wood with sand or dirt. Cutting is swamp water is a good application.
A roller or sprocket wouldn't last long in a sandy environment.

Roller nose was popular on the 70 -80's in the USA. Not popular today.

Biggest downside to a roller nose are twofold.
NO BORING.
Shouldn't cut ice and must be in a warm enogh environment so the nose does not freeze.

Rollernose is popular in South America.
Rollernose is typically a 063 gage bar.
First use the 404 chain for felling
Then use 3/8 for bucking.
Manufacturer supplied this information to me.

Am I brainwashed?

Railroad ties break the tips of the carbide off when you try it.

It is my understanding harvesters use a sprocket nose typically with a breaking connecting tongue between the nose and the bar. The exception is a topping, de-limber, butt saw. Never sold any but watching a harvester is amazing. Harvester bar is usually .122 gage 3/4 pitch.

Getting this stuff out of saw manuals

On the railroad I work for we use replaceable sprocket nose Oregon bars and Stihl 33RS chain. They also do not throw the chains out after they get dull. They use an Oregon 511A grinder to maintain the chains, and they don't toss them until they are used up. We have a full service shop that maintains all the equipment, from a 21cc line trimmer to a 12 cyl 3200hp diesel, they do everything from tuning to full rebuilding of the units in house.
Oh ..they only use Husqvarna Saws

Does roller nose = Sprocket nose or is it a different beast altogether?

If they are the same, Don's post just confused the sh!t out of me.:)

Roller nose

Steve here...
On a sprocket nose the sprocket teeth go in between the drivers as the chain goes around it. On a roller nose the external roller guides the chain around it by the bottom of the side plates...It dosen't care what pitch chain it is. Where as the sprocket tip has to match chain pitch.

Are there any roller nose replacements for sprocket nose bars? I'd like to have a roller nose on my 090 too! I have two cannon bars and one GB.

roller nose

Robert,
Steve here... Yes , replacement tips where made up into the 80's I was told. I got one from a good friend, and the other, I found in the package at a local dealer(still on the shelf). These Oregon roller noses are hard to find now. I just sent two Stihl Duromatic hard tip bars out to have the roller nose slots put in them. I like them I think they roll better than the sprocket nose tips(JUST MY OPINION). WHen I get home from work I'll send a couple close up pics for you. Your best bet would be to troll through the saw shops that have been around for a long time. Thats at least how I found one of mine. There are a few different sizes too. The one on my 090 is for 063 chain and is 2 7/8 diameter. I also have a smaller 2.5 inch for 058 chain. I guess there where some 4 inchers too but they are pretty rare.

Hello Steve
The 088 is wild,Grand Master Flash did one hell of a job! When it gets warm and the wood thaws out we will have to get together and make some sawdust,it takes about a 12pk to wash all the chips down from what the 088KD makes. Seth

Steve
Where are you getting all these long bars from? They are great for making belly bars.I keep a couple around here cause the ladies like'em. Seth

088 muffler clamps

Hello
Steve, I got the chain but have not cut with it . I had to add a gusset to my header because under high rpm it would slide down off the head and get wicked. Seth

square chisel
