Today I was helping friend clean up her tornado damaged woodlot, skidding out firewood and saw logs. She has so many she insisted I take some for my own use, so each time I go there I bring a load of firewood home, but today I pulled doubles and pulled a load of saw logs too.

Here's the two problem "leaners" I've had my eye on, a problem because they were hung up in a HUGE oak...

Anyway today was the day to get them, so we got started by sawing them, in this case 8' 6" up,

and of course, it just sat there

and that turned out to be a good thing, as we had already rigged a snatch block up in a tree so as to pull the "hangers" sideways,

It worked out perfectly, I winched the first one off the stump and over to the tree we had the snatch block in,

So we did the same cut/skid on the second one too, and then after taking the snatch block down, I finished skidding all the 8' 6" and 17 footers out of the ravine,

and loaded them on my doubles, so I had a nice load of firewood and saw logs, and i headed on home!

I'll probably go back later this week for another load of GREAT firewood logs!

Yep, those are some darn nice oaks!! :D

Definitely plenty of firewood left in there to skid out as well.

Nice firewod! Those leaners were clearly in a lot of compression, so how did you keep from pinching your saw (3rd photo)?

At least one has a big crack across the end Rob, I've seen some blow downs where every log cracked like that. Hope thats not the case here, as they are some good looking logs.

Mike, the reason that log is cracked, is because it was sawn out some time ago... The crack isn't very deep and I always saw them out 6" over anyway...

And now the rest of the story! lol The lady who owns the woodlot sold 7 logs to a guy, someone she knows took them to the guys business and charged her $100.00 to take them there and sell them for her. She paid the guy the hundred, he took them and then told her the logs didn't have any value and that there was no money for her!! This made her mad and she asked me what to do, I told her to keep after him and if he wouldn't give anything for the logs to tell him to bring them back!

Well, this went on for a while and the story kept changing, plus he said she would have to pay him another hundred to bring them back!! SO, she asked me if I would go get them and she would give me a hundred for doing so... lol At this point, she was doing it for the principal and nothing more! SO, I told her i'd go get them and leave a couple logs on the wagon for my fee, PLUS she had to give "Dave" the guy sawing in the above picts fifty bucks for his help.

SO, that's how I came about having an older log on my wagon...AND now you know "the rest of the story"... :)

Dave, what has been working so far is, we saw from the top about half way then cut up from the bottom a bit. Then go back to the top and blip the throttle cutting slowly and pulling the bar out as we saw... Just keep doing it until the log lets go...

I don't have any magic, but so far the above has been working for us...

I have never seen oak that tall and straight in OK. It just doesn't exist. We have very large oaks but nothing as straight and tall as this....I can't get over it. Very nice.
My thoughts too. I've taken some nice red oak, but those are awesome.

That is some beautiful timber, how many did you end up taking out?

All of the tree's were damaged by a tornado, either leaners or completely blown over, root ball and all... I'd say there's about 20 or so total...

I don't have all of them skidded out yet, but I think they are now all on the ground..

You had a chance to take any cants off those yet?

Scott (can't wait for the cant) B

My 'pile' is looking the same way....more being added, not so much be processed lately(just haven't been in the mood to play lately).

Persian Silktree, Honey Locust, huge crotches, weird looking bent stuff, and some Hophornbeam that might be spalting(probably done spalting with these temps).
