I decided to get a few of my vintage saws out and see how they do. I ran a Pioneer P60 (99cc), a Homelite 550 (82cc), an Echo 1001VL(100cc), a Homelite 750(112cc), and a McCulloch SP125 with a 101B Kart motor (123+cc). The saws had chains in various conditions, so it wasn't a completely fair test.

put the vids in both formats. If the embedded vid doesn't work, just click on the picture below it.

First up was the Pioneer. This was the most disappointing of the bunch, as it has a brand new chain on it and it has the shortest bar.

Next was the Homelite 550. This saw is no big enough to be a muscle saw, but it cuts like one.

Then the Echo. This saw needed a chain sharpening. I also need to tune the carb a bit. The slowest cut speed, but it sure has a lot of torque.

The Homelite 750. Ran well, but it also needs a chain sharpening. With the right bar and chain setup it would be second on the list.

The Mac 101b. This saw is downright ridiculous. Running a 33" bar with .404 full comp chisel chain. Probably over 11k RPM in the cut. What a great runner!!

I tried to buy a 550 from an old guy cutting roots in his front yard, he would not sell it. I have a cp 125 that I want to put a 101b into, I think that project is coming up if I can find a reasonably priced motor.

Hey that looks like fun!

Everybody needs a log holder like that!

... but why did the camera move farther back for each saw?

I feel your pain. I can't even find an unreasonably priced motor. I hope you find one and I look forward to your build. :msp_thumbup: Ron

Repped you for a great thread. Thanks for putting the vids in both formats. Format #1 no workee for Aaron. Format #2 worked just fine though. Loving my new high speed internet connection. Switched today from crappy satalite 'high speed'. Just in time to see these vids. Makes me want to get John's 750 up and running even more.

I agree - definitely a great thread of old school in action. The 101B Mac certainly has some go about it  As Brian stated - the 101B powered kartsaw is a project I would like to get to one day.

Thanks for the vids.

Regards,

Chris.

Nice thread!! Thank's for pointing it out Aaron! Good job Ambull!!. Funny Aaron It was worth watching just for the 750, and you, and me were thinking the same thing, wishung we could go throw Joh'ns in a log! That thing is a beast!

Glad to see you enjoying that 1001 and 550. Both are running well and thats the 1st time they been in wood. Thanks for the videos JP and glad to see them appreciated.

Here's just the 2 latest examples of what I bought to replace those sweet saws.

Thanks all. It was fun putting this together. The log was about 18". I have a 5 foot bar and chain for the mac. Need to find something around here to try it on. The log holder is a Power Trac PT-1460 with a grapple bucket.

Not sure what happened to the camera. If I shut it off I would have to zoom back in again. After the first cut I left it on and then paused it between cuts.

So thats where the Echo CS-1001 came from . I thought another one popped up from the woodwork someplace. Check out the saws carb and make sure the holes around the throttle shaft isn't egg shaped causing the saw to run funny. I just went thru mine a year ago...Bob

Wow. Where'd ya get a 101b? I'd love me one of those.

Is there a trick to getting these vids to run? I tried both , but neither will play.

Not really fair for the big Echo.
It's running PIG rich and didn't sound like it ever cleaned up during the cut!
I think there is a LOT more in there.

Mike
