It was a foggy but not stormy morning. I was driving up to check on the 071 side, and came upon a LINES ACROSS ROAD sign. Rolled down the window and heard what sounded like a cat pulling what sounded like a log truck having trouble in in the pummy (pumice). So, I backed up and parked in a nice spot and began hiking up outside of the unit, in the fog.
Soon I started hearing extreme upper octave wailing and yelling. I thought someone was injured or dying. The wailing was very very soprano like and was coming from more than one source. There were Ooooooooooooooooos and then howling. As I got closer, the fog cleared a bit. There was the yarder crew, with a cat hooked up to the 071. Everyone was cheery and all in one piece.
I asked if they were having tryouts for a soprano. They grinned and said they were trying to get the yarder leveled out and the pummy combined with the slope of the road was a bit of a problem. I figured that they must have developed special voice techniques for problems with the pummy.
This rigging crew just always is cheery. They do a good job too. Thursday they'll be packing rigging up the (for me) 3 ibuprofen hill. Hope they stay cheery.
