Do any of you guys down south deal with SPB often in an urban setting, if so:
What are your chemical controls?

Onyx (bifenthrin) is labelled for bark beetle prevention. No chemical control is likely to save a tree that's already infested, if that's what you mean. Even if you manage to kill all the beetles, they introduce a wilt fungus into the sapwood, which is usually the more immediate cause of death.

Verbenone, I think it's called, which is a particular pheremone that works to repel beetles from infesting trees, was just being brought to market when the last outbreak ended here. I never got to try it, but next time (unless there's something new) I'll try it.

Do pine beetles fly from tree to tree? Or do the beetles crawl around like most ground climbers?
Great info on how they bring a wilt fungus. Doesnt the fungus come from the beetles back? Here we call it blue stain fungus

The beetles fly from tree to tree. Yup, there are actually a few fungi that they carry - the one that's mainly responsible for SPB's variety of bluestain (<i>Ophiostoma minus</i>) is carried on the surface of the exoskeleton.
