Wish I had my cell with me. I was cleaning up a pile of split White Pine on the court in front of the house. I took the tree down for a friend at church and split the wood for a couple neighbors with back yard fire rings. The neighbors took most of the wood and I was throwing the rest on my burn pile. I picked up a piece and there was a shiny black spider with the biggest, for it's size, shiny black abdomin. The spider was smaller than a marble. I turned it a little, the piece of wood, not the spider, and it had two bright red diamonds on it's back. I thought Black Widows had a red hour glass shape on the bottom of the abdomin. After a google search, of the 32 varieties of Black Widows, several have red or orange diamonds or spots on their back, not belly. I thought of snapping a picture about 2 seconds after I dropped it in the fire. A friend of mine spent two days in the hospital just last week for a spider bite. Guess I'll start putting my gloves on even when doing yard work, Joe.

I have seen a few Widows under old logs. Yes wear gloves in that situation.

A buddy I work with has been out for 2+ weeks after surgery for a brown recluse bite, now that is a nasty little monster there! My wood pile has the huge wolf spiders in it, as well as the widows and the recluse. I don't much care for any spiders but I prefer them to the snakes, can't stand a snake!
