Needs some advise, I have everthing removed from my saw and im ready to split the case on my stihl 031av. The reason is I have an oil leak coming from between the case halves of the oil tank. I removed the several bolts holding the case together but it didnt seem to want to come apart. I have never done this before. Do the bearings press into the cases real tight. Do I need special tools to do this or can I be care full a rubber hammer and maybe a small prybay? any hidden bolts or things I might need to know. thanks

Besides the screws there should be two pins that you need to use a 5mm (I believe) press to hammer out. DO NOT use a prybar, the case is fragile and you will most likely break it, then the case is not useable.

I use a rubber dead blow mallet. Hitting only hard enough to get the pieces apart. They do come apart quite hard. The bearings and the crankshaft are in very tight.

If you look at the enclosed graphic, it will show you the pins (#6) that are going to have to look for. One should be next to a screw towards the rear and the other one is usually by itself near the front, below the muffler.

thanks for your help, ill give this a try. I figured there was something I was missing.

case

You MUST heat the case to get it apart. A heat gun or hot plate and propane torch will work. DO NOT over heat, keep hot plate on low and keep torch moving arond case near bearing. Should only require a few taps to get it apart.

Update: I succesfully got the cases apart. I have everything cleaned. Now All I need is a gasket set and a new flywheel. Does anybody have the gaskets I need. Would like to have case gasket, cranks seals and cylinder gasket. THanks

Do you have a part number for the flywheel? I think I have one, it is not new, but I think it's a good one. I bought a 031 off Ebay for parts and I didn't need the flywheel. I have several flywheels, so to be sure which one it is I would need a number. I can't help you out on the gaskets.

on the inside of the flywheel I see a set of numbers they are 1216610032

thanks for your help
