Whats the opinion? Is Stihl going in the right direction with the steel spring anti-vibe system? I have not run one of the new saws so I would like to know what the group thinks. Lets hear it!

I think so... Run a 360 verses a 361 (partial spring) and a 440/441. The 441 has a couple of different "hardness" options also... harder for longer bars..

In any case, they have no choice. The UK vibration regulations have forced all manufacturers that want to sell in the U.K. to get the vibrations down... phases in over a couple of years.

Andy, are the hardness options brought about by different springs, or can the existing mounts be adjusted on the saw?

Good good good... anti-vibrations!

Well, I think that is good overall. I know people with white hand and arthritis that is caused by vibration. I was also willing to pay more for a saw with good anti-vibe... I have OA and tendonitis myself. I think those laws are far better than the EPA ones on smog from tiny engines like the ones in chainsaws coming out of the US of A.

I hope they do better with them than some other brands with steel spring AV. The saws I've used with springs (my Jonsered in particular) just have a "loose" feel that I really don't like. I feel disconnected from the saw, and to me that's not a good thing. I like getting some feedback from the saw, and I don't get that with the springs. I'd almost rather have no AV than that.

I like the 441 for sure. Smooth as butter. For as much travel as there is in the AV system, it doesn't flop around in regular use as much as I expected.

My 361 is a lot smoother than the 066 or just about anything else I've run. I didn't like the looks of the little springs at first but looks were decieving. I have white finger and a bit of carpal tunnel and I can cut longer with the 361 before I go totally numb...gotta be the AV.

Floppy

Thanks for the input. The floppiness is what i am worried about. I like to feel very connected to what is going on at the cutting point. I have runn a "spring saw" that would bottom out the AV system, and then you have nothing.

If you're bottoming out the springs then you're probably pushing too hard, run a good sharp chains and let the saw do the work.

It does take a little while to get used to the different feel.

That's exactly the way my 2036 is. And it doesn't take much pressure at all to bottom it out. To me, that's pretty much useless and I'd rather run my older saws that don't have any AV at all. Of course they're still better than this old little Mac I had that would turn your hands numb in a couple of minutes! I didn't keep it long........

Not so much...

The springs were bottomed out when pushing no harder than i push with my 044 or my 026. My chains are always very sharp. I would like to think that the 361 and 441 feel more like my Stihls, and not like a Husqvarna.

Of corse Stihl was pointed in the right direction, All they had to do is just look at the Husky saws for better Ideas. LOL Nothing new to some of us.

Point taken...

And if Husky needs to know how to sell chain saws, they can look to Stihl:hmm3grin2orange:

The difference between a 041 super av and a 460 is night and day for vibration. The 460 seems very loose when you start it. Once the saw is cutting, it is fine. My hands feel MUCH better with the 460. I have already had carpal tunnel surgery and need all of the help that I can get.
