The oiler isn't pumping any oil. I've removed the chain cover and bar, taken the pump apart and cleaned it (the diaphram is wrinkled but doesn't appear to be torn), but no oil comes out of the tube when the exposed button on the pump is repeatedly pushed.

How is this pump supposed to work and what would be the likely cause of it not working?

First make sure the filter material around the pump is clean. Second, the rubber boot around the push button only has to have a small hole in it and the pump won’t work properly. Third, the pump diaphragm will also wear and develop small holes and greatly affect performance. Before you take the pump apart again, run the saw without the bar on it. If it pumps oil the problem is with your bar and not the pump. Good luck.

DG2244,

Thanks for your response. The rubber boot (cap) has some slight chain damage and, although it doesn't leak oil, I see some tiny bubbles at the perimeter of the boot along the damaged area when I press the button. I've ordered a new cap ($1.25) and will let you know if it fixes the problem.

i found out with mine that you need to hold the pump diaphram up to a light,,if you can see light through diaphram then it is bad,,,, i learned that from an AS member

I have a 009, and I had the same problem... new diaphram solved the problem... is was worn, and slightly stiff. At this age, it is probable that it needs to be replaced... small investement to find out... if everything else looks good. Good luck!

Update: Replacing the slightly damaged rubber boot under the button didn't help. But, while inspecting the diaphram, I noticed that the fiber gasket between the diaphram and the half of the pump casting that contacted the oil reservoir casting had extruded into a small channel between the pump chamber and a hole that connected to a cast tube inside the reservoir. I flipped the symmetrical gasket over and the oiler now works fine!

I believe you are referring to the impulse passage.Yes if that is blocked, there is nothing to pulse the diaphragm, and the pump cannot work. Good troubleshooting on your part. :msp_thumbup:

Thanks. Where is the other end of the impulse passage?

Near the bottom of the crankcase. You can see it when you split the case for a bearing replacement. Just a wee little passage. :msp_biggrin:
