Trying to replace the chain on a Stihl 011AV that my Brother bought used - replacement chain is a Oregon S55 AdvanceCut. Am using the Stihl 011 owners manual PDF for guidance but the chain appears to be too short to fit on over the bar tip when engaged with the drive sprocket. Tensioner is backed out loose - what am I doing wrong?

What bar do you have (length/gauge)? What sprocket is on the saw? S55 would be 3/8" pitch for a 16", .050 bar with a 9 tooth sprocket.

Bar measures 17.5" overall or 15.5" from tip to lockdown bolt - unsure of pitch. Drive sprocket appears to be 7 tooth - did you mean the bar tip sprocket?

Sorry, I misspoke. 55 link would be for a 16" bar with 9 sprocket teeth. I should have asked for both saw and bar sprockets. Even better, is it a Stihl bar? Can you read the p/n on it? It seems there's a bar (3005 008 4813, 3/8, .050, 9 tooth sprocket) which calls for either a 55 or 56 link chain. Odd, perhaps they made a change at one point which requires the additional length. But, I'd think they would have changed the p/n. Someone knowing more than me might be able to advise. Did you count the drive links on the old chain? Did you back off the adjuster all the way? Is it being blocked by sawdust?

Stihl Bar 1.83 3005 000 6313 - trying to find old chain - adjuster tip barely threaded on - no sawdust blockage.

Stihl doesn't currently list that bar. And, to add to the confusion, this thread mentions an 011 with that bar p/n, using a 56 link chain. But, this thread claims it's a 15" bar which uses a 54 link chain. I'm gonna guess you need a 56 link chain, based on what you're working with.

Looks like old chain is MIA. Tried tilting the bar and still coming up short. Nose sprocket is 9 teeth. Drive sprocket doesn't look too bad?

How difficult would be removing the clutch be for you?
We have tools and basic/intermediate mechanical skills between the two of us. What exactly is the r&r procedure? Even removing the clutch, it seems if we could get the chain on, it would probably be super tight, which doesn't sound right.

Probably will just run it down to the local saw shop tomorrow morning and ask if we have the wrong chain.

Anyone know why I'm not getting email notifications of replies to this thread even though I'm watching it and have it set correctly in my preferences?

Look closely at the bar in the pic I put up. It looks like the same bar you have, it says 55 dl., I think.
Stihl shows a similar bar (as mentioned above) using 55 or 56 link chains. I think that means one or the other, not either. Guessing something changed along the way - a slight change in the bar (despite the same p/n), or (perhaps more likely) a mid-model change to the adjuster mechanism. I'm too lazy to research further. It seems the OP needs a 56 link chain, since the 55 won't even force-fit.

But, I'll defer to you, I sometimes only know enough to be dangerous. ;)
