Hi Folks:

Well I am finally going for broke ... I damaged my saw in the winter and cobbled it back together enough to carry on. Plus now, it is plain old filthy everywhere. It had a missing anti-vibration mount and a broken handle. Made do with a little silicone rubber and duct tape.

I am at the point of taking out the engine. I think I might actually pull this off and get this thing back together. I have never dismantled a chainsaw before, or anything else of reasonable mechanical complexity.

I have so far noticed that my engine does not have a piston ring. I was using the rope technique for blocking the piston in order to screw off the clutch etc, so maybe I knocked off the piston ring. But you think there would be some sign of it, could it have come off and be hiding up inside the cylinder? Or was it plain old never there?

There also was no gasket between the muffler and the engine.

Did Stihl modify the design and delete parts, or did the dealer lose some parts when it was in for warranty repair? I know the muffler would have been taken off at the dealer, but the engine shouldn't have been touched.

Thanks for any comments.

Ok, I'll bite. What do you mean it has no piston ring?

Did you look at the piston from the exhaust port to determine this or do you have the cylinder and piston off of the machine?

Trust me, it never ran without a ring.

Let us know more detail.

thanks

OK. Thanks for the reply daemon2525. Like I said, I am green when it comes to engines.

I was looking through the exhaust port.

I went out and had another look. On first inspection in not the best light, it looked like an empty grove at the top of the piston when I was comparing it to the Stihl manual. I figured the piston ring should be in the grove and was missing. After reading your statements I can see now that the piston ring seems to have two high bands with a low spot in the middle, the low spot being what I thought was the groove.

I love the net because I can find someone who knows what they are talking about when I don't have a clue.
