i have one of the first generation Stihl 020AV "Professional" saws. Seems like the ignition module is bad - just quit firing. i bought a used working ignition setup (coil and module components) off ebay and was told initially it was off of a first gen 020. Well what the seller meant to say was that it off of a first gen 015. This setup looks exactly like what Stihl is offering as a retrofit replacement ignition kit for the first gen 020 saws. However i am not sure if 1.) the 015 kit will work on the 020 - do not see why not and 2.) how the silly thing bolts down underneath the flywheel - there is a significant configuration difference between this conversion kit and the original part.

Does anyone have any experience with this conversion and if so is there information somewhere i can get that will help me understand how to mount this new system?

I have seen the ignition module mounted in two places on the 020av. I believe the early ones were mounted on the coil frame using the screw closest to the center (triangle shape pole). I have a 020av apart in front of me where the module is mounted inside under the plastic cap. The module number is 1118 400 1001. It has a mounting flange that is a part of the module with one hole in it . A screw attaches the flange to the saw body and provides the ground. The coil wire goes to the screw on the ignition module. I don't think it matters where the module is mounted as long as the module frame is grounded and away from the rotating parts of the saw.

Thank you for your reply

The module part number you noted is the same as the one on the module i bought from the Ebay seller. There is also what appears to be a junction block that connects the module and coil.

Would it be possible to send a picture of the module coil installation you are looking at on your saw.

Sent you an email with my email address in it.

Thank you,
glenn

It is 1 o'clock here now. When my son comes home at 5 o'clock I will ask him. He has the camera.
