I saw an 020AVH in this book, and saw this funky casing on eBay. I figured it had to be for a heater.20160420_033927.jpg 20160420_033442.jpg

Alex I doubt they are using the exhaust gases to heat the handle.. It would easily melt the textured hose and your hand as well.

According to Stihl designations the "H" in an 020AVH means heated handle.

There are two slits in the pipe and a very small hole drilled from the factory.
It looks like either the two slits were designed to accommodate a clip or to act as a venturi to mix, and temper the heated exhaust with outside air.
A friend of mine at the Stihl VA plant said there was an exhaust heated handle version of the 020AV. He also said there wasn't any way of turning it off.

Hi Alex

See if your friend at the Stihl VA plant has may be accsess to the old TI bulletin 32.1974 on paper or microfiche. In this TI, was one topic about the handle heating. I think it was introduced with that bulletin.

The topics of that TI were: Chain brake; Handle heating; Sealing of choke shutter; Handle tubes; Oil hose; Fuel hose

Excellent. I'll see.
Thanks!

20161128_191302.jpg This oval looks suspiciously like it lines right up with the handle heater pipe as its mocked up, on this optional muffler casing.
Like possibly a cutout like an electrical box.20161128_191332.jpg 20161128_191401.jpg The little riser casting coming from the muffler casing looks like a regulator plug valve could go inside and be clipped with a e-clip, or one of those clips like a window crank handle, but smaller.
The small hole on the opposite side might be for a screw or shaft?

I was able to find #32 and #33 at that parts company called Chainsawr on an internet search. They were listed as oiler components for an 020 av.
Looks to be a valve plug, that when you turn it regulates the flow of exhaust from the muffler. I didn't have any luck sourcing anything else. The hose starts with 1113 series, so I guess the 031 used it too.
