I bought a used Stihl 024. Seems to run OK - needs a new bar and chain - but leaks bar oil. From another thread I learned that the small vacuum valve above the bar pins sometimes gets clogged with debris and sticks open, but I have poked a wire in that hole, and felt the spring, a dozen times and am pretty sure that is not the problem. Cleaned away as much oil as possible from around the bar pins. Removed the bar tension adjustment screw and pin. Looks like oil accumulates in the bar tension adjustment slot - like perhaps there is a depression in the slot, and a very small crack along the upper edge, through to the bar oil reservoir. I suppose this damage could have been incurred by dropping the saw on its tension adjustment pin. Is this diagnosis likely, or commonly encountered? Is replacing (half or all) of the crankcase a straightforward procedure? Or do I just drain the bar oil reservoir after every use? Thanks for any advice.

I once tightened a bar improperly, driving the chain tension adjuster into the oil reservoir body... which cracked. It leaked oil, and I repaired it with JB Weld, ground it smooth with a dremel. It lasted for awhile, then it started leaking again. I did it again, and it lasted awhile, then leaked again. It is now a parts saw, if somebody needs one... :msp_sad:

Interesting. But now, thankfully, irrelevant. The seller responsibly agreed to refund the purchase, so I am out only the return shipping. I count that cost toward my continuing education in chainsaw design and function...
(Currently working to resuscitate a Homelite Super 2 automatic; the sneaky bastards interchanged the normal order of the gas and chain oil tanks, and I filled each with the wrong fluid. LOL. But that confession belongs in a different thread. The saw has duck-bill valves in each tank, to regulate pressure and help pump oil - they fall out and rattle around, but not harmlessly.)
Sorry, don't need those 024 parts.
Cheers,
