My grandfather just gave me his 1980 stihl 028 WB. He drained the gas back in september 2000. I looked at it quickly, and it'll need a new vent hose from the tank. What else should I replace before I try to start it. I took air filter off and carb looked clean.

Thanks!!!

Troy

Replace the fuel filter, fill it full of mix gas, shake it up a bit, pull it over about 6 times fast with the choke on. If it doesn't fire leave it over night for the gas to soften the carb diaphragms. If it was in good shape in 2000, it will fire up.

Do check the fuel hose -if it's "putty like", replace it.

If you want to... just rebuild the carb....

This is good advice. I would also change the plug and put some mix in the cylinder berore cranking it. Also, check for spark before you install the new plug...just to save time troubleshooting.

I rebuilt the carb today with the kit, replaced the vent hose and new spark plug. It has 126lbs of compression and spark. Won't start though. Looking at the pistin/cyclinder threw the spark plug hole...it looks ok, top of piston may have some build up on it, but hard to tell in the little light i could get down there. Maybe its just flooded for now. Didnt try any starter fluid.

Dont use starter fluid!

Let it sit....though it should start easily.

126lbs is on the low side......you sure theres no scoring or air leaks?

I had a Homelite MCS given to me. It was "froze up". I put a little wd-40 on the piston through the muffler let it sit for 15 minutes pulled it real easy to free it up and it fired right up with fresh gas!!! Runs great! That saw sat in a barn for over 20 years!!!!!!!
Theres always hope.

I just pulled the muffler off and yes, there is some scoring. When i moved the piston up and down it was swamped in gas, so i left it upside down and will wait for it to dry out now.

Did the same thing with my little Power Mac 6... fired right up... it has low compression and some carb issues that I am gonna work out. It is a clean little saw, and I am gonna rebuild the entire saw if i can.

nqc2k... if you get the bugs worked out of that 028... you'll love it. Mine runs as good now, as when it was brought home new in 1984. Great saw.
