I picked up this saw today from my dealer for 20.00, Someone brought it in for repair and just left it. My question is what should the compression be, and
would it be a decent saw to fix. It is decent shape it just runs horrible. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I'd say you did OK for $20 :jawdrop:

When you say it runs horrible, what do you mean? Is it hard to start, idle poorly or what?

150 psi is considered to be mid life of a saw and below 135 it's getting to be time for rings/parts.

No kidding. Used Dad's for a bit this past weekend. Nice little saw.

I'll give you $25 and shipping, no questions asked....

Enjoy it, for that price you can afford to put a couple of bucks into it if it needs it.

Well I just pulled the muffler and theres a little bit of scoring on the piston I think that might be my problem, If the shop could of found the estimate I would know right off what the problem is, oh well I cant complain for the price.:)

Took about 10 pulls finally started . It idled , smoked alot . Hit the throttle a few times , just wouldnt clear up.

I've a 028 super. One of the best saws stihl ever made, a little heavy by todays standards but just keeps going and going and going......

If you need a cyl/piston go with the super assy, fits right on and has more displacement. For $20.00 you got a deal even if you spend $ on a top end.

Smoke is GOOD.

That means that at the very least there is mixed gas in it, starting it and getting NO SMOKE would have me scrambling around pretty good.

Bill- *pull* *VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM* Ya, she runs real good doesnt she...*VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM No smoke, must be ashless/smokeless oil.

Me- lets put some mix gas in it to be sure...

Bill- It runs too good, dont worry about it...*VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM*

Me- Just trying to be safe..

Bill- You Worry too much "*VROOOOOOOM* -motor bogs- *falls on its face* *wont idle*

Me- oh boy...

Bill- It aint got no compression....oh :taped: , it just seized....

Me- Told ya so...

Bill- Its got straight gas in it....Crystal clear, I can see all the way to the back of the tank...:bang:

Me- Give you 5 bucks for the bar and chain...:D

Sounds like you speak from experience. I would've offered 5 for whole saw and throw new p/c on it.

That's a nice looking saw, you did exceptionally well! I'm guessing you need some fuel system work, which is usually pretty straighforward. If you see some scoring, I'd pull the jug, clean it up, put a piston in, and go cutting. Using an aftermarket piston and assuming a carb kit, the total should be around 50-60 bucks and it might take you an evening if you're drunk or haven't done it before. I have one on the shelf waiting for the same treament. Ironically, it was also $20.. I know I was happy!

Oh, you should know that there were various displacements for that saw...you will need to measure the piston before you order one.

As far as the fuel system goes, you need to check (for cracking) your fuel line and impulse line, make sure there are no intake leaks, and you'll probably need to install a carb kit. I'm not sure if you mentioned it, but I assume you have attempted to adjust the carb correctly?

From the small snippets you've posted it sounds like the saw is showing signs of low compression (hard starting, doesn't want to idle, etc.) I agree with Mad Professor and pick up a tecomec super p&c for it. You did good, the saw is in nice overall condition.

I would clean and adjust the points, adjust the carb a little rich, and use it
for a while and see if you will like it before sinking any money in it.

These old Stihls will run pretty good with a little scoring, so the
running problem is likely the points, running rough, rich, etc.

Never mind my last post, the picture is still downloading, but I can see
the electronic quickstop in the pic, so there are no points, but you might look at the kill wire for cracks, that might be a problem that would cause the running problem as well.
