I'm new here and was wondering about the advantages and the how too of modifying the exhaust ( ie. gutting it)? are there any other inexpensive performance tricks? thanks in advance. ~Aaron

Welcome to the site! A quick search for "muffler mod" should yield a LOT of reading for ya!

Here's one post about an MS290 muffler mod: 290 Muffler Mod.

A muffler mod (and corresponding carb adjustment!) is about all you can reasonably expect to ge out of an MS290. Their design just doesn't lend itself to substantial modifications. But a muffler modded MS290 with a reasonable length of bar and a nice sharp chain will get a lot of wood cut just fine. Stick with .325" pitch chain and a 7-tooth sprocket in the hardwoods, though. Stihl RS for clean wood, RM for dirty.

Thanks!

I did some drilling and cutting today on the muffler and it definitely did make a difference! next will be tweaking the carb settings a little more, I'm not exactly positive on the exact hi lo setting but I'll be reading up! ~Aaron
