I got a fairly nice 032 AV in a trade today. When I attempted to start it I noticed the cored would not retract. I took it off, squirted a little wd40 in hopes off freeing up the spring. Retracts great!! Put in back on the saw, and it seems to have the exact same problem. Took it off again and looked at the little plastic pawl. It looks just a little worn on the end. I don't have a great understanding of how those work. Would that prevent it from reacting properly? many thanks for Any help you can offer. I don't want to order and replace that pawl unless you thinkthat's the problem. ( BTW, it seems like it pulls ok, retracts ok, until I put it back on the saw

Take off the cord side of the saw. You need another 1-3 wraps of cord on the spool . Where you stop, make sure the pawls are fully retracted still. I can't remember if you need to pull the spool out of the frame of the saw. The spring can pop out and spew everywhere.

Your adding more spring tension with each wrap of the cord. Which aids in the rope retraction

that's an idea, however, it seems to retract just great when it's not on the saw. Does that match with your idea for fixing it, or would a worn plastic pawl cause that?

Check crank bearings for play at the flywheel. Look for any wear or interference between the rope pulley and the flywheel. If none, disassemble starter and clean ALL components. Look for any splits in the rope pulley, free spinning of the rope pulley on the shaft, correct rope size, and a lot of crud in the spring. 6 turns on the rope pulley for tension.
THEN report back. Inquiring minds need to know!

i have seen a worn pawl. they are cheap , but usually they just dont engage. my mind think s spring tension, then some sort of hang up on the pivot point. slowing the retraction when mounted on the saw.

i have a honda engine garden tiller , that has been bugging me . doing the same thing. i have rewound the spring and rope. times ive played with bolt tension. to the frame, looking for a bind. it might be just a dirty stiff rope in my case. its probably something simple, i'm just not seeing as i play with the assembly

Check for crud (grease, sawdust, etc) on the flywheel. Often buildup where the pawls engage will catch the starter pawls and make it unable to retract.

That pawl #1118 195 7200 is severely bent over backwards/broken, it should be straight out forwards. Might try putting some Viagra on it, lol.

Looks like someone yanked the rope really hard with a piston stop tool in place, or it was flooded with fuel & hydrolocked.

The clip is on correctly, I have seen those upside down. Make sure the little washer is still under it.

I just now looked at the picture I took and now it’s obviously broken. I didn’t see that before using my old eyes! Thanks
