Stihl 034 Air Filter

Just picked up an old west german 034 AV. As I understand it, old carb was bad so someone put on a new one and then the air filter didn't fit. They lost interest (and also the air filter and cover) and now it's mine. Supposedly it runs, have not tried starting it. Feels like good compression.

I need to order an air filter and cover, and also the outer bolt that goes into where the chain brake handle meets the saw, although maybe my dealer will just have one of those lying around. Anything else obvious this is missing?

Carb is marked ZAMA C3A. I understand there are at least two different air filters for these saws... can anyone tell which one I need from the pics?

Great older saw!

You have a newer compensator carby/filter. That is not OEM O34, think 036 and go with that.

The issue will be that the air filter for the altitude adjusting carburetor extends into the space where your tank vent is located.

Thanks for the heads up on that... found this old thread and it sounds like I can use some 064 parts or go ghetto with a piece of fuel line and a few grub screws.

Found another workaround for the tank vent and air filter interference on my 026 and it ought to work on your 034 as well. I think it looks almost stock.
It's a generic tank vent with a short piece of fuel line to provide a tight leak, leak free mechanical seal.
The fit is really tight during the insertion and the air filter should keep it from falling out if it happened to work loose.

Ok buddy. Hope you didn't buy anything yet.

You need to find an old 034/36 carb and reuse the metering plate off of it on that carb. The non compensating type.

You can also take that plate off, cut the comp opening off at an angle, then JB weld the opening. Once the JB hardens up, you'll need to drill a small hole in it so that the metering diaphragm can move. That comp opening will hit the old style filter and cause it to not sit flush with the carb.

Don't cut it off and try to stuff it with anything to keep it clean. It's very close to the diaphragm and you will make the diaphragm stay up towards the carb body. Your saw will be pig rich.

If you overcome the tank vent issue and bought a new style MS360 air filter, you'll need a late 036/MS360 rear cover to fit over it and lock on.

Old style filters had elongated mounting screws and the covers had a round external knob and an internal flat piece of plastic that locked the cover between those nuts.

New style are larger in dimension, have the comp hole, and have a tit sticking out and flat mount screws. The larger rear cover has a lever and not a knob on the outside. The lever will catch the tit when it rotates to lock it on the saw.

I bought the newer style air filter, cover and mounting screws, and got them all mounted up this evening.

John - That generic tank vent looks perfect. Where did you pick that up?

How did you get around the tank vent issue with the new style filter?

It came with an Echo HC1600 carb & hose kit I purchased on eBay. I think there are plenty like them available as stand alone parts.
