I am selling a Stihl 038 Magnum 2 (II). The saw is in great shape and runs great also. It has an almost new Stihl 20" bar and chain. Asking $425 obo. $375 without the bar and chain. It will handle an 18" to 28" bar with ease. The saw has great compression. I am selling to invest in a lighter saw. Looking to have something I can carry around the woods easier. Contact me through here or send me an email to [email protected]. I am in Downeast Maine. Buyer pays all shipping costs.

Sorry, I thought I attached the pics.

Man, that brings back a lot of memories! Is that a West German made saw? I know some of the last ones were made in Brazil and some in West Germany. The two I had were Brazilian made saws.

I see the recoil cover was made in West Germany. Without the sticker on the front of the case how would you know ?
My old dead and gone Stihl dealer always said a 1 at the beginning of the serial# was from Germany. Don't know if he meant West Germany or if that's even true.
Think the mix and oil caps maybe were made in West Bejing
Love these saws too

Those 038's are balls deep in torque. If I remember right they had a peculiar little whine to them, an old Stihl mechanic told me it was the gears in the oil pump.

GLWS, that's a beauty and a beast in one.

I might be interested in this one as a back-up to my 046. As I recall, the 038 Mag has almost the same grunt as an 046 but weighs a pound or so less. Quite a few loggers still swear by them and never cuss at them. It's yet another saw that Stihl should never have discontinued.

From what I was told by a Stihl rep, they are still the saw of choice among loggers along the Vermillion and Wabash river bottoms in eastern Illinois.

It is a West German saw. The serial # starts with 1

The serial does start with the #1. So yes made in Germany. Yes the gas and oil caps were not made in Germany or South Carolina...

I have someone looking at it tomorrow. I think he is a tire kicker. If it falls through I will let you know.

one of the best saws in stihl's lineup
the on/off/choke combo might be flimsy and choke tends to give problem with age
oiler is a tad stingy
other than that its a very strong and dead reliable saw, will go on and on for years
