I have a chance to pick up a used Stihl 038 in good condition. It has a 24" bar, and looks like it was used a good bit (but not abused). Here's my question. I have a chance to trade one of my Husqvarna 65's for the saw, but I don't know much about the 038. Is it comparable to the 65, or does it have a larger displacement/output? Both of my 65's run 20" bars, so I could always use a 24" for larger stuff. That would put me with 16", 20", and 24" saws, which should tackle anything I'll face!

So, what are the opinions of this saw and how does it compare with the Husqvarna? Should I stick with the 65, or will I be better served with the Stihl?

I'd say get it...

They're roughly comperable in displacement. Exact numbers depend on which 038 you're looking at. A 'standard' 038AV is 61cc. An 038AV Super is about 68cc IIRC. An 038Mag or Mag II is 72cc. They're all about three pounds lighter than your 65's and have an antivibe setup (your 65s are rigid aren't they?). The 038AV is at least equal in power to a 65, and the Super and Mag/Mag II are both certainly more powerfull than a 65.

The 038 series is highly regarded. They'll easily pull a 24" bar. Lots of parts are available for them, including good cheap Italian aftermarket piston/cylinder kits. I'm looking for a good 038 in my area, but so far I've only found overpriced saws and scam artists...

I believe you are mostly right, but the weight differense is closer to 1 1/2 lbs, I believe.

The 65 do have some sort of AV, I have just been informed, but it is a design from the 1960s.....

The 038 is a good bit newer.
