I'm about to attempt a rebuild of an 039 that was run without oil. I just got the replacement cylinder and piston kit. It is a Stihl. My question. The nipple for the impulse hose at the base of the cylinder is unattached in the kit. Is this something I just tap in? Or does it require Loctite or some other sealer?

Thanks for any help! I'm probably going to have a lot of questions. I didn't tear this saw apart.. I got the estimate and freaked.. the dealer wanted as much as a new saw.. so.. I've got a box of parts and a service manual. I hate putting together things I didn't tear apart!

Just tap it in but don't hit it so hard you deform it, it has to be hollow to work. If you hit it real hard you chance crushing the brass closed and then you will no impluse. Just tap it litely and constantly till she's in.

Hey Jibber,,,,

I use a straight piece if 1/4" SSt tubing about 6" long that I cut with tubing cutters and reammed it just enough to slide over the hose bib and it hits on the shoulder of the fitting and drives it right in,,,, Just take her easy,,, and tap her home with a little hammer,,,,,,,,,,,

Good luck!!!!!!!

That is the main beef I have with my new employer, a customer brings a
saw in for a "tune up", I pull the muffler and see piston damage. Normally I would call the customer at this point, but the philosophy of the shop I work at
now, is to tear it down totally and give a full complete estimate.
They bring a saw in because it is not running right, and I give them back a
box of parts, and a teardown charge, more if they want it reassembled.

Jibber, is your old piston and cylinder toast? Can the cylinder be repaired? I might want it for my future 029 rebuild.
thanks
