I just bought a 041 AVE Super with an 048 piston installed and has 150psi of compression with a 25 in bar. It fires right up and runs great but when it comes to cutting it doesent cut as fast as I think it should. It takes 2minutes
to cut through a 10inch diameter tree just going through the middle whats the problem? Also in general is the 041 a good long lasting saw?

It could be that the piston isnt the right one for the saw, and is not maximizing the power output you could be getting from it with the original piston.

It could also be that the chain is DULL, and needs a REALLY good sharpening. remember, this saw isnt a high revving thing like a modern day 044, its an old slow machine with more torque than speed.

Even so, if it takes 2 minutes to cut through a 10" tree, then the chain is either dull or the saw is barely running. It may be slower revving, but 2 minutes through 10" of wood makes me think that your chain has been rocked out or is otherwise very dull. Sharpen the chain or replace it and start fresh if the old one is in really tough shape, and you should see cut times of about less than 30 seconds in the same wood.

041/048 are slower saws compared to todays saws.. but with a GOOD chain they should do pretty comparable.. having 150PSI is darn good compression. like brand spankin new. maby the carb needs adjusted and chain filed up.
with todays oils you should be able to get roughly 10,000RPM out of it. if you crank the RPMs up over stock, use only a quality brand name mix oil, stihl, husky, or some of the recommended motorcycle oils, such as mobile racing 2T, klotz, maxima.. etc.. no cheapies or generics.. you want a proven good oil to keep the saw together! mix is *never* a place to skimp. ever. i have used 50:1, 40:1 and 32:1 in all my saws with great results.. but 32:1 is my current choice for any 2cycle i own.. and that will not change. i still have not fouled a plug, even when running REALLY rich.

Say what,041 with an 048 slug, pshaw. An 041super is 48 mm,an 048 is 52 mm.How,pray tell, would one do that little trick? Now then an 042 with an 048 piston would in fact be an 048.Any body that says an 048 is slow has evidently never seen one of these things cut.If I'm not mistaken they are still the highest hp to weight saw that Stihl ever made. The short coming was the weak crankcase.

I ressurected my old 41 super from the dead this winter. They are good saws, not speedy, good torque for cutting hardwoods. The only kick I have ever had against these saws was that stupid muffler design and stacking the carb on top of the engine, and they would shake screws loose occasionally.

If your taking two minutes to cut through a 10" piece of wood there is something definately wrong. That saw will walk through 10" wood and not even slow down with a sharp chain and tuned properly.

Sorry to say this, but there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY an 048 piston could be in this saw, the 048 has a 52mm bore, and 36mm stroke, the 041 AVE super, has a 48mm bore, and 40mm stroke. this is a no go, unless you bought the saw from someone who claimed that they put an 048 piston in it, in which case, you fell hook line and sinker.

I think perhaps the "48 mm bore" got confused with the "048 jug." Just my guess.

Step 1. Sharpen chain
Step 2. Check air filter
Step 3. Adjust carb
Step 4. Check for leaks in the carb stack... these puppies shake!

There are definitely more steps, but I'll bet you find the problem before you're done with these! A super should slam through anything you throw at it.
