I have a Stihl 041 Farm Boss that has developed a nasty oil leak, bar oil slowly leaks out even when the saw is just sitting around and really comes out if you run it. Without completely tearing the saw down I have not found the sources of the problem seems to be coming from the oiler and bar tensioner area. Any ideas on what may be causing the problem? If the saw needs to be completely torn down not sure it is worth fixing since it does not get used much. Thanks for any ideas you may have.

Oil Leaks:

Well heck. Thought there would have been some help on this thread by now. Must be Stihl has lost some of its popularity, around here and noone wants to help or give some suggestions. Hope you get some help soon. Take care. Lewis.

Don't take the saw apart unless your SURE you can reassemble it correctly. If your not sure take it to a dealer. It will cost you less money in the long run.

The oil pump comes out the front of the case where the spike attaches. It is held in by an internal snap ring. Insert a 5x .08 screw to remove it(most any screw on the saw will work).
When you pull it out, you will see a rubber grommet come out first. After removal, you can slide the pump piston out. An o-ring will be in the end of the pump body where you slid the piston out. Inspect the gears for wear. If the look dished, replace them.
REPLACE the grommet, o-ring, and spring. Clean the end of the pump where the o-ring fits by LIGHTLY running a flat file over it, just until it is shiney. Usually takes no more that 3 LIGHT strokes.
Clean it all up and reassemble, lightly oiling all parts.

041 Oil Problem:

Well, looks like we finally got some good advice, thanks to Stihltech. I would personally like to thank him. Lewis.
