Aside from the difference in wrist pin sizes,Will any 044 piston fit any cylinder? (assuming either one is not worn out) Or do they have number or letters to match them? Thank You Mike.

there will be a letter stamped in the top of the cylinder, on a round piece at the very top. You can then match the piston to that. Most will be either A or B and the pistons are usually A and B compatible, but they are also stamped on the top. There are other sizes but not very common, around here anyway.

pistons

The A or B piston has pretty much went by the wayside. I would be more concerned with fit in the bore. Yes, other than pin size, the bores are the same in an 044.
HOWEVER, at some point ( think this started with the 440), the piston ring location pins were moved outward. This would pose a problem with an old piston (044) in a 440. I know, they should not come out, but the piston ring ends would be exposed.

Piston ring pins

I don't quite follow what the pins moved outwards means exactly. While we are at it, Any actual measurments in mm or easy way to check for acceptable wear on the piston/skirts or the cylinders. Thank You Mike.
