Stihl 044 vs 046

In doing extensive reading and searching on this forum, it seems the 044 Stihl comes out somewhat ahead of the 046.

Is that just because of price, or is there some particular problem the 046 has that the 044 does not?

I think it comes down to a good user. When the 046 came out, I had 044 trades all over the shop. Why? More power.
A few customers did not. They stuck with the 044.
Most of these users are the more informed and pro user. They know that big power is not all it takes. I guess I call it finess.
These users maintain well. Never dull.
I have some customers with both. They see very little difference and continue to buy either saw and are happy with them.

i bought the MS460 (046) because i needed a big saw, at the time i didn't realize that i would be buying a new 066G three weeks latter!! if i had known that then i would have bought the 044. only because its about a pound lighter though. i really like my 046, its a great saw. i run it with a 20'' bar and full chisel chain. nothing wrong with it IMHO.

I have never had the pleasure of running an 046, I own an 044 and like it a lot I have heard from a lot of guys that really like the 046 though, either one is a great Stihl saw.

lot of the timber cutters round here use the 46 and the 66. Not many complaints.

I agree with JimL in my area all the loggers run either 046 or 372's some have 385 and 066's for the bigger stuff I to have not heard any complaints about either saws,nothing but good luck from what I hear..
