Amoungst My Saws........Fool That Has Too Many!!!
Sorry to do this on a new thread, But I just couldn't resist. I put a lot of time on my PP346 today. This saw is even better than my initial impressions! I ran the saw side by side with an 044 that had a 24" bar, sharp full chisel chain and a ported muffler. I have run this 044 and it is no slouch. We were cutting Red Oak about 24" in diameter. The PP346 ran heads up with the 044! I am so impressed with this saw! Kudos to Dan on a job well done!

That is a believable comparison to me. If you do a search(full comp vs full skip times), you will see I ran a comparison between my walkerized 346xp, and a stock 046 in white pine. The numbers werent that far off, and from what I read, dan does a heck of a job with them.

So Rich, you're telling us you had a 24" bar on the 346 as well, right? I mean, you're cutting 24" oak against this 72cc saw which is dropping a round in one pass and your 45cc saw is doing the same if I read you right. But I'm not sure I am. By "full chisel chain" are you saying "full complement" of "chisel chain"? And was the 044 in fact completing the cut after you'd gone through the log with your shorter bar and reached around to finish?

Please clear that up for me, but while doing so, don't think I'm not elated for you; and maybe even a smidgen envious.

Glen

First off, this was just a side by side comparison, no timing. The 044 had a 24" bar, full-comp full-chisel chain. The PP346 has a 16" bar, full-comp full-chisel chain. When I say heads up I meant dead even. The 346 didn't beat the 044, just ran real close to it. Take into account that we had to watch what we cutting too. My buddy who ran his 044 was watching too and couldn't believe it either. I am not an easy sell on performance, this one is a head scratcher. Believe me I would not say this had I not seen it with my own eyes. With the given skepticism that goes with an online message board. I know better than that!

If you ever have the opportunity to run your 670 against a ported 346,don’t bet a whole lot of money on your 670.
I have ran, more then a few of the 670s and I know how they work. I still own one but it has a Husky 272 piston and barrel.

H-man is right. My PP346 will not outcut an 044. Although it will outcut an 036 in 16"-18" logs (ask Toddppm). When I first got mine I thought it could outcut an 044. Even if it won't, does it matter? It's still the baddest 10 lb saw on the Eastern seaboard!

Rich- It just keeps getting better for about the first 15 tanks of fuel. Then it levels off. After a couple months you start taking it for granted, until you accidentally pick up someone else's stock Stihl 260. Then you smile, quietly hand them back their POS saw and go grab your own. :p

Brian, stock 26 sure but if our saws ever meet up please bring some tissues with ya ;)

Nope, I have never had the pleasure of running a ported 346. But I did run my 670 against your "well seasoned" PP372. The 372 was faster for sure but not by a large margin, and that was in 20" oak where the extra displacement makes a diff. The 670 held up quite well considering stock internals and 4-5 fewer cc's.

I have a hard time believing that a PP346 runs the same times as a PP372, thats all.

Intoxicated with Exhuberence!

Rich this tells us you are pleased with your 346. How are you cutting that 24 inch oak with your 16 inch bar. Was the chain on the larger saw comparable in cutting potential, same amount worn and sharpened by the same person.

If Rich were overbucking, he could darn near cut a 24" stick with a 16" bar and it would decrease his cut times since he would be cutting a smaller cross section at any given time than a straight through cut with a 24" bar. That`s a challenge I`d like to be part of.

I don`t mean to knock your 026 in any way, in fact I`m very fond of that model, but the consensus seems to be that the 346 takes mods better than the 026. I don`t think that any run away winner could be predicted.

First off, I never said that The PP346 would beat a PP372. It was an 044 that I was running against.

This was just an excercise in playing around with saws. Go back to the original post, the chain on the 044 was sharp. Hold old it was I do not know. The friend running the saw is anal on having a sharp chain. I was working my way around the log, making fan cuts.

Also, this was done when we both had saws running and a last minute thing strictly for fun! I never said that the 346 beat the 044, just that it ran even with it.

Please don't go overboard with all this! I just thought this comparison might interest some members.

shoot let rich talk his saws up. every time i get one rite .. to me it becomes the greatest saw.
heck sat the boys,, all thought my partner 500[49cc opened up] was my fastest. until we got
to the 25 inch,, well cured oak that the land owner brought up with his fork lift.
then the 036 blew all but one 041 away.
next time im gonna take the the 372 down ,,..cant resist it.
u know the way that thing looks ,,it really invites a few side bets .
id rather have an plowhorse that runs like a racehorse,, than a racehorse that just does what it looks like it oughta..
the fastest horse of his time ,,and possibly the most influential stud.
had the stride of a jackrabbit. nothing smooth about it.. his name man o war

Hey Chris- just in case Dan doesn't, I have one here that I just sandblasted and painted with high heat stove black, I won't be using it and you're welcome to it for free, just the shipping is all I ask for. thanks, JJ
