I am looking for a very good used 046 stihl piston, horizontal machine marks still on piston is perfered. stupid stihl dealer wants 155.00 for a new one. I have trading stock and a very small amount of that green paper

I like the piston from meteor. But I have had problem with wrist pins, cir clips and the caber rings they come with. So after buying a meteor piston and oem rings, pin and cir clips I'm near the cost of a oem kit

The circlips are the only thing I replace with oem.

I've seen as many problems with OEM clips as I have with Meteor. I had a 550 with 4hrs (as verified by AT) that threw a clip. If they are the double-eared clips, I will remove one the ear on one side. But Meteor stopped using double-eared clips in the last couple of years (there are some in the pipeline I'm sure).

As for rings- I can't recall ever having a failure with a Caber.

I understand the reluctance to use AM if you are a production cutter. But all parts have a failure rate and to me, the Meteor stuff is just a durable as OEM. I don't consider Meteor aftermarket in the same connotation as it is usually used and it certainly isn't a pejorative IMO.

I never actually had a failure of caber rings. What I find wrong with them is the seal. I put a set in a 372 and got 135 lbs comp dry cylinder. Immediatly I installed oem rings one same dry cylinder and got 150 lbs.. same with a 066 I rebuilt except the oem rings only raised 10 psi on thAt saw

The cabers will make plenty of compression but take longer to break in. I've had a 288 with 230 lbs of compression and a couple 046 / 460 at 190-210.
