Hi all, I'm new so I'm not sure this is the correct place to ask? I have had my 048 for a couple years, she is testy at times, compression is 125 so a bit low, seems to always want to idle high and when I adjust air mix it runs great for awhile then peters out, also seems like if there is no wind the exhaust gets thrown back in my face, not sure if the muffler has issues or its not firing right? Seems like I have only noticed the exhaust issue that last few times cutting. I know I could upgrade but I really like old saws better. Reminds me of cutting with my grandpa in the 80's. :cold::cold:

I'd check the muffler mounting screws and its condition on the exhaust issue. If the muffler has been loose and or leaking coming back on the cylinder, the direct heat and leaner running condition could easily seize it. 125 lbs compression is lower then it should be and my experience has been similar to what your describing as petering out and keeping it tuned well enough to idle and run well. Sounds like it needs at least top end maintnence .
There was an 048 very reasonably priced in the trading post section, I think it is still there, down a page may be 2.
Thought about it myself, I really like running 048's, was my favorite saw where I used to work. I have an 042 here (Interchanges w/ the 048) I was going to convert some day, and the 048 parts for the swap but it is a project I never seem to find time for like about 3 dozen others.
I don't see why that particular model didn't excel in sales like the 045-56 , 038 etc..Personally I prefer using the 048 or even the 042.
