Hi all

I am new to old saws so bear with me..

I've just bought an old stihl 051 av which I will use for a little sawmilling. Im now looking for a ripping chain for it. The question is which chain will fit?
The only text/numbers I can find on the bar is: stihl 11 78 31 3002 000 8423.
Anyone knows what the numbers mean?
And another question: gas leaks from the gas cap vent. Is that normal? I know its an old saw, but it is a little bad when it is for milling lying on its side.

and yet another question, how do I get to the sprocket? It seems a complete different system than my other stihl saws. How the hek do I get the bolt of, it just turns..

Thanks. It runs sweet, almost no use on it. Starts easy, sounds pretty hardcore. No decomp tho..
I think your right, on the chain it says 404!?
Any of you know if its normal that it leaks gas trough the vent in gas cap? And what are the "slider" marked with + / - you can see above sprocket for?

It will leak when not running with the screw plug vent because it isn't a check valve. You can use a newer cap from an 076 or something like that. They have the orange rubber check valve and they will not leak.
The lever with the +/- you are referring to is the bar oil flow control lever.

No, if the chain says .404, that means that it is .325 pitch........

Crazy Germans......... They think that they are funny...
They insist that both world wars were just practical jokes that turned out poorly.......

Hi again
Do any of you know if my 051 av is a old model? From what I can find about this saw there should be a decompression valve, but there is not one on my saw?

All of this is my opinion, basically worthless
your saw looks like maybe a rebuild, the crankcase, handle and some other stuff look a lot older than the top cover , muffler cover and clutch cover.
The new parts are stuff that is still available from Stihl and from the most recent model.
If the saw really is an AV Electronic it is the most recent version of the saw.
There are 8.12 billion different varieties of these saws so the likelihood that is a mutt-saw is pretty high. Nearly every version had some critical flaw that got improved upon several times later in the series lifespan so many modifications are common.
It is VERY COMMON for these saws to have the decompression port plugged instead of replacing the valve when it went bad, it was the primary cause of scoring in this series. One of the tech bulletins recommends plugging the port if the customer doesn't need it to start the saw, I seem to remember this was in concert with the conversion to later starter setup.
All 051 models are old models not made since 1985.

Hi
Thx for the input. Some of it makes good sence. Its very easy to start without the the decompression valve.
The story I was told when I bought this saw, was that it was bought in the 1980's i Germany and used very little since then. If that is true I have no idea. Just by looking at it, it has very little wear, but Im really no expert.
