I've never worked on any older stills and I'm not sure if I want to. I just picked up a non running 051. Has good spark, but compression seems low. I would think a saw this size shoutd be hard to pull, but its not! Do theses saws have a decompression valve? If so, where is it? I wanted to get a look at the piston, but I cant even figure out how to remove the muffler! I'm probably gonna clean it up and sell it, as it's probably above my pay grade. Except for low compression saw is pretty much intact, although the throttle lock does not seem to hold

Certainly not above your pay grade. They’re incredibly simple, a manual may be handy for
you to follow if you’re new to repairs. Search the chainsaw sticky for “beg for manuals” they’ll help you out.

I just looked at the for sale section in Acres chainsaw. Asking price is $250. Not running. Just so you have an idea on what you have. Like mentioned get a repair manual. Shouldn't be to hard to get into it and get the muffler pulled. Good luck. FS.

The decomp valve is notorious as a leak point on these saws
I have 2 x 076s and an 051 and taken out and plugged the decomp hole on all of them

To get at the exhaust bolts you need to remove the handle and top cover, the bolts are accessible looking down from the top, use a magnetic tool if you have one as you cannot grab the bolts with your fingers, little bit tricky to get back in though.

Saegenspezi has lots of spare parts at reasonable prices (made to Stihl specs without the Stihl label in Germany)

Spend the time and effort to get it going, they are 89cc of old school muscle, bit on the heavy side but they cut like a dream when in the wood

Beasts that were the one of the main logging saws here when I started. Haven't seen any 051's with a decomp valve, but never say never.
If there is a plugged hole on yours, make sure the is a metal washer in the hole that seals between the decomp plug and cylinder. Definitely causes low compression and leakage.
Intake and muffler come off the top of the cylinder as was stated before. Muffler cover, rear shroud and top handle make it much easier.
Watch the intake gaskets. If they are deformed, replace them (you may have to make them, I think they are obsolete now). Also I sand off the bottom of the intake block as this is the reason the gaskets deformed.
Fun story: real common the have the oil pump leak and lock up the cylinder. Cure was to reseal the pump, get enough oil out of the cylinder to start it again (I can still feel the handle getting ripped out of my hand a few times).
One you got it started, you did not shut it off until it stopped smoking.
Had two running out side to clean out. Customer came in to see me, looked around and said "I did not know you worked on Harleys". It is just what it sounded like.

I got the handle and top cover off, just hope I can remember how it goes back together Scored piston. I couldn't get the cylinder off as my Allen wrenches are not long enough. I ordered a long one, and if the cylinder looks ok when I get the Allen wrench, I will order a piston

You can always upgrade it to a 111cc. The larger jug uses studs instead of bolts and they're one size larger, so you'll need to source the studs and then drill and tap the holes for one size larger.

I've got an 051 that I bought from someone here. It's been sitting on a shelf in my garage - unboxed - for over a year. If the piston isn't minty (and maybe even if it is), I'll toss a 111cc jug on it.

I had one given to me to work on. It had too many problems so went on eBay… $100, parts saw.

Good luck with your boat anchor 🤪

That's the issue with these saws. It seems like I need two or three complete saws to make one good one.

When I rebuild my 051, I'll probably do a YouTube video of it.
