I picked up an early 066 a few weeks back and I have a few questions about the intake/filter setup on the saw. It seems a bit more complicated than the setup on the 660, and there seems to have been several different configurations on the 066 before they finally arrived at the setup that we see on the 660. So, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction on these ?s...

1) Do they make a winter filter cover that works with the HD canister filter in this pic:

The only cover I can find in an IPL or on eBay is this one, but it doesn't look like it's deep enough to cover the filter.

2) Is there supposed to be a black rubber gasket in the recessed area of the housing when using the HD filter? I don't see it in the 066 IPL but I see it in the 064 IPL.

3) Are these two halves supposed to seal tighter than this? There seemed to be an awful lot of debris in the carb box when I split them.

1.- No, just the regular HD filter cover. The cover shown in your ebay link isn't compatible with your current set-up.

2.- No, the HD filter has its own gasket built-in. If you were to put an additional gasket in the recessed area of the
filter base, it wouldn't seal well and the filter cover wouldn't fit on correctly.

3.- No, that's as good as it gets. You can put some clear RTV silicone between the filter base and airbox if you like,
but it really isn't necessary.

There used to be a gasket there (where the filter contacts the filter base), for use with the old metal backed HD filter, which didn't have sealing lips. The gasket is not needed for the more modern HD filters as the sealing lips are on the filter.

Thanks for the response Jacob.

So is this the HD filter option for winter then? I can't find it in any IPL to tell if there's anything else that goes with it, or if it only works with the newer style covers that have the summer/winter carb shutter built in.

I've seen people try to stuff the gasket under the new style HD filter and then clamp it all down.

They usually end up damaging or ruining the clamping knob or filter cover.

I wouldn't bother with that one. Just run your regular HD filter system as is. Unless you're cutting in a driving snowstorm
at -40, your regular HD system is going to do an excellent job.

Your flat-top cylinder cover should have the winter/summer shutter. It's orange like the rest of the cover and will be on the
right-hand side (clutch side) closest to the airbox.
