I recently bought an old 076. It does not have the chainbrake, and I would like to install one if possible.

My sprocket/clutch cover does not appear to allow installation of a chainbrake - cover is flush with the case on the top, all around - , so I guess I have to replace it. I saw a few parts on Ebay (band, handle, etc), and hoped that I could scrounge the parts that way, but after looking at the IPL, I realized there's a lot more parts.

Anybody know where I could get an 076 chainbrake assembly ? Can all 076s be retrofitted with a chainbrake ? What's the best way to do this, scrounge parts one by one or wait ? I called my dealer and he didn't know what I would need... said I was the first 076 owner to call in in the 10 years he'd been working there. He's going to make a few calls.

I've checked ebay (only found a few parts), chainsawr, and Baileys.

thanks !

You might be able to get the parts from your dealer, but a kit will not be likely. Not much to it really. The chainbrake bar cover will have the band, lever, and over-center mechanism. You will also need a different hand guard that will allow for the full travel of the actuating lever. And, the chainbrake and non-chainbrake covers are completely different.

You'll want to watch Ebay for a complete clutch cover. Here's mine before I had a muffler cover for it.

I believe all 076 saws should have the crankcase mounts for the hand guard/chain brake handle, but there are a lot of frankensaws around of this series! Does your saw have the crankcase mounts ("ears") for the spring mounted hand guard/brake handle?

There used to be a kit which included all the parts part number 1111 007 1025 but that became NLA from factory in 2001. Part number 1111 640 1713 should include everything but the brake handle, still available over here but not cheap. £120/$190 inc Tax!

Ebay or here are probably your best bet for sourcing parts without breaking the bank, plenty of these saws around.

Did you just scroll through the pages on the chainsawr site or did you send them an email? When I was looking for a p&c for my Dolmar 114 they didn't have one listed on the site but did have one in stock.

Thanks for the replies guys !

JDNicol, thanks for the part numbers. I'm seeing my Stihl dealer tomorrow so I'll see if the part # helps him.

Here's a picture of the saw, if I understand what you mean by "ears" (the protrusions in the case above the spikes/dogs?), it seems mine does

Thanks chris... I didnt even realize I'd need a different guard as well. This will cost almost half the price of my saw, LOL.

I just searched their website for "076". Good idea, I'll send them an email too.

They still sell the saw in Mexico, got a buddy going there anytime soon?

I don't think I've heard of anyone of my friends going to Mexico in the last few years. Not sure why..:msp_scared:

Your saw has the right ears. You can probably modify your existing hand guard (assuming it bolts to those ears) buy trimming the stop to allow it to rotate further forward. Once you get a chain brake cover/lever fitted you will see what I am talking about.

Well, as it turns out, I may have found myself a chain brake assembly... on another 076 ! I'm supposed to check it out tomorrow. In the span of less than 7 days I may have acquired two of these beasts !

Bought the other 076 even though I saw it only had the hand guard, but was missing the rest of the assembly, partly because the seller had driven about a half hour to make meeting up easier.

My stihl dealer looked up the part number for the kit and the computer said it was not available for order. Bummer.

Does anyone have any pictures of what the chain brake assembly looks like, either from the outside or the inside ? I'm wondering how it enters the clutch cover. I've looked at the IPL, but I'd like to see what it looks like installed. thanks !

Well, after about a week I haven't heard "boo" from chainsawr so I'm guessing they don't have the parts.

And as I study the 076 service manual, it seems like the clutch might be different on saws with brakes.

Finally, it looks like the IPL I have is for chain brake models... because the clutch cover part #s on both my saws don't match any part # on the IPL.

Today I emailed technical inquiries to Stihl Canada and Stihl USA with my saw serial #s and inquiring about chain brakes. I emailed both of them because I got one saw in Canada and one in the US, so I wasn't sure if one country's office would only have information about saws sold in that country.

Anyways, someone at Stihl USA told me that "We have never offered or made a quick stop for the 076 chain saw."

Is this true ? Were chain brakes only offered outside of the US ? Were they ever offered in Canada ?

I've emailed the gentleman a copy of the IPL and mentioned that the service manual also has a section on it, but have yet to hear back.

LOL. I guess Bob Myers at Stihl was offended when I pointed out that the IPL and service manual suggest he was wrong. He responded with a terse, one line email: "that kit has not been available in 25 years". Oh, so now you're saying you DID offer a chainbrake ? I don't know why the guy couldn't just say he was mistaken, or that he misspoke.

076 chain brake

Hey Nuggy Buggy,
I've read through the thread, and many others on 076 Stihls.
Did you ever find any more info on the chain brake for your 076? I have a 076 super and am working on the same issue. I have a local dealer that is looking for an used brake for me. If he comes up with something do you need some photos or anything else?
FYI, I'm a newbie to this forum and website but I'll try to help you if I can. Let me know.

Hey there,

A member here ended up selling me a chain brake kit. It looked old but almost new. I haven't yet tried to fit it to my saw. I wasn't sure if I needed one at all anymore- I'm only going to use it to mill - but seeing as they're so hard to find, as soon as he offered it to me, I bought it.

I'll try to fit it this weekend and let you know how it worked.

Thanks also for your offer of help. I'm a newbie to saws and engines, but they have become a bit of an obsession for me. I love them for some reason !

Hi Terry,
Glad you found a brake kit. They do appear to be hard to locate. I'm heading to my local saw shop tomorrow to see if the guy had any luck finding an old one that he said he had laying around. He has a new one but I'm afraid to ask how much he wants for it. I may just end up going with the new one though.
BTW, I just found a new problem with my saw. The spark plug wire cover cracked all the way around where it comes out of the case. There is a small black sleeve that protects it. I slid the sleeve back and found the exposed wire and looks like it was shorting out to the case. Could be why my saw doesn't want to start. Hmmmmm.
Good luck with your milling. I may end up doing some myself someday.

Anymore chainbrakes?

Before I search fleabay, I wanted to see if anyone else has a chainbrake for an 076. Please PM if you have one available. I am currently building an 076 Super from old TS 760 cases (yes I have installed the oiler without case modifications). I will update my old thread on this after I finish the build with the saw running, cutting, and oiling as it should. Expensive build, but still cheaper than buying a new one from Mexico. I appreciate anyon'e help in advance. Thank you and have a blessed day.
