So ive heard a couple of people talk about using open pipes on 084s. Im obviously interested as i have an 084 .....

If you are making mufflers, see if you can make the exit port of the muffler so that it does not exit directly out of the front of the saw.
This results in exhaust bouncing off the log up into the operators face.
If you can get it coming out of the side you can then do this.
This pipe is 3/4" in diameter which is 78% more in area than the stock 9/16" opening.

To improve saw dust ejection I also made a dustin clutch cover.

That's what I had in mind, just a simple outlet on the front cover as the original 084 outlet would be a pain to reproduce in a casting.....I'll give it some more thought.

That's some nice work you've done on your muffler! Thanks for posting it!

This is the setup I plan to copy on my ms660. Does the stock chain cover still come off with this setup? Do you have a picture of the muffler side of the mount Bbl? My 660 is mostly going to live in a mill with the occasional firewood blocking.

Yes it does.

Here are few other photo

The inserts were made so I could test whether the stock H jet would adjust enough to cope with the larger opening.
The smallest one is 9/16" and the largest is 3/4

Did you just braze or weld a threaded plate to the muffler? What did you use for a gasket? And do you run a spark arrestor? (My phone won't load the pictures sorry for the questions if the pictures answer it. I will make sure to look on the computer tomorrow) thanks for answering my questions.

Bob, I believe there would be a market for your pipe if you chose to make them.........Very nice!
I'll put it on the list.

The pipe is ally - it was TIG welded to a small flange which bolts onto the existing muffler using the same mounting holes as the original muffler uses to mount the deflector.
No spark arrestor - I don't use the 880 for anything but milling.

Thank you BobL. I'm super glad you like to share your great ideas.

Mine will probably made of steel and brazed because that is what I have access to. But that should give me a few years of use without having to worry to much.

Well they're not doing anything useful stored away inside my head. :)

Good luck.
