Because the 1st bidder bid more then the 2nd bidder and the 2nd bidder bid $1050.

I didn't see the opening bid was $1000.

The opening bid doesn't have to be $1000 it could be $1, but the proxy bidding for bidder No1 will automatically go up to beat the rival bid, or it's maximum if the second bidder bids higher.

The other instance is where a reserve has been placed on an item, If the bidder bids on a $1 starting bid for an item that has a reserve of $100 and his maximum bid is say $150, the proxy bidding system will automatically put the bid in at $100 hitting the reserve.
