Hey guys I'm going to look at a stihl 090. It's running strong and looks clean in the pics. He is asking $650. What should I look for to make sure it's all legit. I'm not that trained on antique saws. Serial numbers or something that typically goes wrong, etc. Thanks for any input. It's converted to .404 chain and has no bar and chain.

I'm not very familiar with those, but a compression check would be a good indicator. Can you tell an 070 from an o90? I read recently that an 090 clutch has 6 shoes and an 070 has 3 (or 4?) shoes. That's about all the help I can give.

I have an 090 that I believe is legit. Could take some pics if you want for comparison but there are prob quite a few pics avail on here and the web generally. Can't really help with any of your other questions sorry. Mines a beast - I didn't know what I was getting when I bought it but I'm glad I did. Paid $500 with a pretty average Alaskan style mill and new Gb titanium bar and a few odds and ends. Just starting to realise how lucky I was...

Thanks for the info so far it's helpful. He wants $650 and it also comes with a Jonsered 2050 turbo and a Homelite Super XL which he says are complete but not currently running. Says he is trying to clean out the garage. I don't need this saw for anything other then milling. Possibly the odd cut here and there but I have a solid 044 that I use most the time for felling and bucking firewood etc. I want somethjng that'll mill 40"+ slabs because I make tables and need big slabs for the tops. I also own a Woodmizer LT15 for all my smaller and dimensional stuff. This saw would get tuned up nice and not get used a ton till the time is right.

For that price if it even looks kind of legit I would buy it

Talked to the guy today on the phone. He says he bought it off eBay like 10 years ago. It was "rebuilt" or tuned up by a reputable guy I guess. He paid $900 for it then and said he has used it maybe 6 hours in those 10 years. I'm definitely going to check this thing out. Worth the 2.5 hour drive. He also has an 070 which he uses a bit more so no confusion on potentially an 070 with 090 tags.

That's the one he sent pics of. I'll be going next week to look at (likely buy) this thing.
