Gentlemen,

First post on this forum. I'm shjopping for a new chain saw and have narrowed it down to two models: Stihl 260 or 260-pro. And I hoped to trouble this board with a couple of basic questions.

a) How can you tell them apart, physically?

b) Do they both have a metal crankcase?

c) According to the Stihl website, the ONLY difference they mention is the decompression valve and an adjustable pump - are those really the only differences?

d) The decompression valve is for easy starts - but is it THAT big a deal?

At my dealer, there's a $200 difference between the two, and I'm wondering how two models can have a 60% difference in price when one is supposed to be just a minor upgrade over the other. Also, I don;t want to shop around delers and mistakenly buy a 260 thinking I'm getting a 260-pro, or vice-versa.

Thanks.

The pro model has a decompression button in the middle of the engine shroud, the regular model just has a rubber plug there. They both have magnesium crankcases. On an 60cc saw the decompression valve is not really needed.

$200 is a big diffence, I would cmpare some prices. Good luck!

BTW welcome to Arboristsite!!!

The Pro has adjustable oiler and Decomp...

.

The 260 Pro has a decomp valve for easier cranking and an adjustable oiler, which is a very nice feature. Oil is the key to long life of the bar and chain. With different bar lengths its a nice feature to be able to adjust the flow of oil to the bar. Looking at my signature block below, you will see that I own both types. The 026/260's without the adjustable oiler are pretty generous with oil and I've had no serious problems with them. I think you would be happy with either saw; although, having said that, I'm probably biased towards the "Pro" series.

I have an eleven year old 026. It oils like crazy. Not much bar oil left when the gas/mix is gone. It has been a fantastic saw. I would pay a couple of extra bucks for the Pro, but not $200.00.

I am on my original bar, and I would guess that is from all the oil being pumped out.

They are about $40 different.. in the USA (I don't know where fsdfghdfgh is)..The decomp is a waste unless you are in a tight spot, but the oiler not pumping at idle is good. As for adjustibility - heck, most just turn it up full and forget it

$200 difference??? In my area there is only a $150 between a MS260 (non-pro) and a MS361!!! The difference between the MS260 and MS260 Pro is $40 or so.
