I just bought my first Stihl chainsaw (MS 460) and was wondering if it's ok to run cheaper bar oil through it. The Stihl bar oil seems way over priced. I don't see what's so special about it.

yea u can run other stuff in it....but i wouldn't..i by stihl oil by the case(6 gallons) and it is right at $45 for me...if you are not going to run stihl i would atleast get one of the other major brands of oil...husky, dolmar, save-a-chain, good oil is good oil...

We make our own bar oil. Filtered and cleaned recycled oil, with an additive that makes it sticky.

Personally, I wouldn't use some of the bio oils, I have seen, in one instance, it gumming up the oil pump etc. Wasn't stihl bio though.

No need, IMO, to use stihl bar oil over any other bar oil. You are only lubricating your chain with it.

Bar Oil

I Like the stuff Bailey's sells Motion Lotion, it runs clean and it's not priced horribly either.

I usually buy the best priced bar oil I can find. I am not aware of any problems due to cheap bar oil here. I like the sticky stuff in warm weather and what pours in cold weather. Sometimes I purchase conventional oil at auctions cheap and use it for bar oil. I worked at a dealer who had a tree service that used nothing but conventional oil and was told he never stretched his chains.
I would say if you are running bars longer then 25 inches or your oiler is struggling to keep enough oil on the chain you could very well benifit using premium oil. A sharp chain will stay much cooler and utilize oil much more efficiently then a marginal edge which would work harder and require better lube. I am finicky about a sharp chain.
I am still buying a decent quality bar oil for under $4.00 a gallon at rural king. Looks like it goes 2+ times that in many stores across the country.
