Was wondering if anyone had any input on handheld Stihl blowers. I know, I know... backpack blowers are the way to go... but, for now, I was just inquiring as to whether it is worth getting the BG86 or save the $$$ and just get the BG55. How much of a difference in blowing power is there really? I know what the specs say, but I want real world feedback. Thank you much in advance for any input!

I don't think back in the day when I had a BG55 there was even a BG86.

Not sure about your question either, because the 86 has about 36% more nozzle wind speed, therefore should be the higher priced one. Hence would make more sense to "save the $$$" for the 86.

I had my 55 stolen, then went strictly backpacks, but have contemplated... and most likely will get another hand held again for the convenience.

I got the smaller Echo backpack from HD for around $250 a few years ago. Baileys has them for under $300. Excellent power to weight and nozzel velocity is perfect for around the chipper, or the leaves in my 1/4 acre front yard.

BG85 was a great blower.

the BG86 is lame.find a dealer with old stock or get the Husky.

John, what model is the Echo you bought from HD? I am looking at the PB 265 for $269. Looks like a decent blower but I have read in the reviews that some believe it is underpowered. Personally, I don't have to have the most powerful blower, so long as I can blow chips and debris off the roof and driveway I would be fine with it. Just curious which one you have.

That is it, I don't know how it could be underpowered for that price. I was ready to shell out five bills for one, but got a wild hare to check out a few big box stores first. I am very happy with the purchase, and a number of my clientele and their crews are impressed with the power:weight even before I state the purchase price.

Yep, that's the one I'm looking at. When I did landscaping everyone would scramble for the Stihl blowers in the morning. I was usually one of the first to arrive and gather my equipment for the day so I always got a Stihl. Wasn't until I was little slow to the draw one day and had to use one of the Echos. I was pleasantly surprised. I love my Stihl saws but I don't mind an echo blower at all. This one is definitely on my to get list. Great price!

love the convenience of the hand held. Fits perfectly in my truck tool box. But to answer your question with a question...How much and how long will you be using it? I just use mine to do cleanup on driveways and sidewalks roofs etc...

I have an older Echo pb 413 but its close to 10 years old paid $299 at HD and the thing runs like the day I bought it. Still starts 2 pulls max and blows very well. For the price it cant be beat.

FWIW the new pb500 is only $330 with twice the displacement.

It comes in 2 throttle configurations, tube and hip. I like the hi (shown above) on my smaller model, I've used tube mounts that will bend the control wire. Though I have heard that the hip controls are a bit more fragile.

BG85 is an excellent machine. Definitely worth the extra money (not much) over the smaller units that are similar. BG86...I don't know about.

:agree2:
I recently purchased the SH86 which is the BG86 with a shredder/vac. In my opinion, my SH86 is an excellent machine with more than adequate blowing power. It it had more blowing power, it would be excessive for a handheld. Professional grade OPE is well worth the few extra dollars. I got 15% off the MSRP during my local dealer's Spring Demo Days.

I like Red Max. I think they're made by Komatsu. Excellent weed whackers too. Stihl has the saws and shears locked up but I'm not sold on their trimmers or their blowers.

redmax makes awesome commercial landscaping equipment, specifically their backpack blowers.
as far as handheld blowers, i think the stihl is good and is about equal to the husky, i always take the end nozzle off though

I dont like the way that the stihls choke knob always falls off, same with the shoulder straps. Tried a shinindawa and couldnt believe the power. Anyone whos used one of those knows what I mean when I say youll get rid of your rakes.

John, I had to look up this thread to remember what model Echo we were talking about. Can you believe I found the PB 265 for $215 with free shipping. I think I'm going to buy one this week. My little hand held will just not give up the ghost. Although it is leaking oil on my pants now. Hence, time for a new one...

BG 85/86 will out power many other brands lower end backpack blowers. Now that wood sales have slowed to a trickle, the boys and me have become lawn lizards and just do wood one day a week. We have done commercial lawn work for three years and the the BG85/86 is more than enough blower to do commercial work with, we have had the 85 for three years and have had zero issues with it, as far as a choke knob mentioned in one of the earlier post this model does not have a knob that can fall off, it has a lever style choke that can't come off. We have had zero issues with it, we also have a backpack style blower and find the handheld a much more versatile piece of equipment. The only place where we see the benefit of the back pack style is when you step up to a blower the size of the 600 magnum stihl for heavy, heavy leaf removal in the fall, and only if you are doing it commercially.
It's just like saws boys, Stihl rules the handheld market as well, others may be good, just not great.lol We've got three FS 80's trimmer's and a 90R four mix, not one has ever been to the shop and a couple are hitting 25 years of service. The 90R has been just as durable as the two stroke 80's so far.

I have a bg55 and 2 bg85's and a 65cc echo backpack. After cutting the tip off the exhaust of the bg55 I dont notice much difference between that and the bg85's. (theres a $200 difference between the two here) They get the job done and are very practical.

I held off getting a backpack for years due to lack of storage on the truck but now Im looking at getting a bigger feed hopper on our other chipper so they can have one to. Backpacks ROCK.

+1 My BG86 has great anti-vibe and plenty of blowing power. With 17 years of service, my FS76 trimmer still starts and runs like a new one.
