I've got a 260 that stalls when I reduce the throttle if the bar is pointing downward at a 45 degree angle or more. It works just find if I cut on the level or above level.

This is the way that I have adjusted the carb. Is this right? I open the LA [idle speed] screw until the saw is at a fast idle with the chain moving. I then adjust the L [low speed] screw first in then out until I get the fastest idle. From there I open the screw [richen the mixture?] about 1/8th of a turn, and then reset the LA screw so that the chain doesn't turn.

That may work but you could also be running way to rich.

I adjust the carb by turning both the L and the H screws all the way in until seated. Then turn them out 1 to 1 1/4 turn. This is the base setting. Then I work on setting the LA screw. Turning either the L and H screw back in again will lean it and turning either of them out further will make it run richer. Very small turns 1/8 at a time will make big changes.

Since I don't know what setting you initially started with I can't say for sure, but sounds like you are probably running too rich.

Your carb adjustment procedure sounds OK; but, this may not be a carb problem. When my saw did not run in one position but did in another, it turned out to be a bad seal. Lets see what the experts have to say on your saw.

My 260 did this too, After modification the Problem went away.

I was thinking that it might be caused by fuel pooling in the intake passage, the once the saw was tiped forward the excess fuel poured forward flooding the base sending the mixture rich.

This is how I do mine as well on all my Stihl saws with one exception. I lightly seat the needles (both low and high), and then I turn them out only one turn as my base setting. Then fine tune the low side from there using very small turns of the screw. I don't touch the high side until I make a cut with the saw. Then if it bogs, I will adjust accordingly.

Remember everyone has different ways to do this... so what works for some may not work for others. Hope this helps a little.

The 026/260 I believe use the exact same settings, someone please correct me here if I am wrong.

Attached is a .pdf file on the adjusting instructions without use of a pocket tachometer.

Here is the pocket Tachometer adjustement instructions.

My last saw would run when started on the ground but died when picked up. Had the vacuum seals replaced (don't know which ones(s)) and it worked.
