Hello everyone. I just bought a stihl chain for one of my mac saws.

It is a 3/8 L/p picco with the safety links. I have never used stihl chain before & am not sure on the correct file size & angles for sharpening it. Do i use a 5/32 file like my other 3/8 L/p chains ??

Was also wondering if I hold the file @ 90 degrees, or if i have to angle it.

Thanks - Mike

I like the Stihl 3/8" lo-pro chain on my climbing saws, but quit using the safety chain years ago. The bumpers are too high and reduce area for clearing chips, so they are a lot slower cutting than the non-safety chain. I use 63PM-(link count) instead of the 63PM1-(link count). Some shops around here only carry the safety chain (the PM1) because most purchasers are homeowners and others that aren't qualified for non-safety chain.

Anyways, yes you use a 5/32" file and I tilt the file handle down slightly. Same as most other lo-pro chain.

I was at Meijers tonight looking at a file for the chain on my Husky 372xp. They come with the file and the guide. On the guide are different degrees of angles for the various types of chains. A Stihl dealer should be able to tell you the exact file to use. Don't file the cutter at a 90 degree angle. Also, as the cutter gets worn from dulling & sharpening, do not forget to keep the raker filed to the correct depth. In my Husqavarna catalog, they have a file that files both the cutter & raker at the same time. Gypo Logger should have some valuable input on this subject.:blob2:

About your "jocking"?

What else are you wearing? Anything black? Tell me slowly....
I am an old man, and I need the time.....

Hey StIhL MaGnUm;
Great link to the pferd site. That is great info for someone like me who is trying to learn the art of filing. Thanks for the link!

I do not wear black that was Mr. Cash. He could sing. Me I can not carry a tune in a bucket.

The beaver that I used was my Mc. chainsaw. I did make a copy of the picture you posted That old Mc. cut that tree like it was butter. I know how much you love the Mc. chainsaws so that was the one I sharpen the chain on. I do own a stihl and husky.

Father Time

Tony

When your Dad and my Dad came alone Men were Men with a capital---not drug store cow boys or hanging around on street corners. They worked from sun rise until the sun set. They gave a days work for for their pay---This also applyed to all men in those day they did not have a union job All they had were strong backs and the will to work.

I am sorry about your Dad I know it Hurt all his love ones to see him go through what he did,---A stroke took my Dad health away---We were both blessed to have Dad for eihty some years

I have learned that growing old is not fun. The people that call it the golden years do not know what the are talking about.I still love to work with my saws and see the sawdust fly. I am not man enough to use the husky 3120 with six foot bar now You know the old saying if Mother Nature don!t get you Old Father Time Will

Take my word the old saying is no joke it is for REAL
