I was in my local dealer today and he had a deal on the black chaps from stihl. Anybody used these? Any opinions on them or others? I'm looking to get a new pair soon. Thanks

I just got a picture of some extremely nice chaps in my email today, but can't post it here. ;)

As far as which brand of chaps, I cannot comment. Never seen a pair used for saw work here in Florida. All those northern guys say they are not too hot, but hot in Minnesota doesn't compare to hot in Florida. But if you can wear them, any chaps are better than none for bucking wood.

I have wore a few pairs of them. I use them cause I work at the dealer.

Seem like a good piece.

I bought a pair of the black Stihl's last fall. Pricewise, they are about equal when you tack on the shipping to what else is out there. I'm not impressed with the clip system - I think there should be one strap/one clip, but you get used to it.
As for their effectiveness; I've been fortunate enough not to find out.

Whats the diference between the black Stihls and the regular? , I use the regular in the winter cause there heavier, but iget a lighter pair like timber savage, or any thing reasonable that looks safe.

Mine are pink chiffon which I bought on sale from Lambert.
They do look better on him though.....

Seems like a good piece.....

I think Jeff Sikkema has the best deal on high quality chaps. He sells Swede Pro that are the same thing as the best Stihl chaps for quite a bit less. Try this link:Jeff Sikkema at S&S Sawshop Chaps are a good investment and you might as well have the best right? Russ

logcutter429, I think that the black chaps are regular but maybe they are lighter. I know that they aren't the heavy chaps for winter work but they'd work for me. I'm not going to be wearing them day in and day out.
Thanks for the help guys.

Another quick question, do you guys where the mesh shields? All that I have is safety glasses. I know that they are better than nothing but maybe the mesh screen would be better. Any thoughts on this?

Most recommendations I have seen state that safety glasses should be worn with the sheild....I think the intent of the mesh is more to keep sawdust and wood chips etc out of your face, where as the glasses specifically address particles headed for the eyes.

I don't routinely use a mesh shield, unless I'm using a stump grinder, when only a fool WOULDN'T.

Personally I don't like wearing chaps way too awkward to work in a good pair of fallers pants with suspenders is more comfortable and not that expensive, Stihl and Husky make them.

As for the screen on I use Peltor equipment and the screen on my hard hat has saved me a few times especially using the brush cutter cutting heavy grass. I have had large stones get hurled up and the screen has protected my face I don't wear safety glasses under the screen. I tried it but it was too crampted the muffs ride on the glasses arms which inturns puts pressure on behind my ears.

I wouldn't use my saw without my fallers hat with muffs and screen safety first in my mind you can't replace your eyes or vision.

yeah - definately get the Stihl ones because of the filtering ability. The slightly different shade of orange in the Husky chaps causes them to breathe more thus hampering the filtering capacity.

chaps

Steve here...
I bought a pair of the wrap around below the knee and ankle, Husky chaps. They have three straps on each leg from the knee down, I where them with suspenders under bibs in the winter time. They work great, I don't think there uncomfortable at all. Stihl has the same type , but my local Stihl did'nt have them in stock, and would'nt order them unless I bought them sight unseen. I went to a local Sherrell dealer in town, and they had the Husky ones in stock. I just put a piece of duct tape over the Husky logo.....LOL
