another stihl lightning cutting up the forest. runs smother than i expected.it's no wonder they were so popular.called it a contra because i see more post about them.
As far as I know, they were called Contra in Europe, and Lightning in North America, but it may not be that simple.
They have also been called Contra-Lightning according to the "Stihl-Tabelle" at this site.

Jim L, that looks like new wrap (cushion grip) on the handles of those two Stihl saws. If that is true, where did you get it from and how did you put it on?

Stihl Dealer and blood sweat and tears.

The stuff is a sombich to put on. I took some plumbing fitings and made an addaptor that i can put in the end of the rubber,(It comes in like 6 foot length, ileave it long till i get it on the handle) and put some air preasure behind it to aid in getting it on the handle. I also use alot of dish soap for lube.

Its a pain the first few times. im fairly proficient now that I have done it 20 or so times.

I can vouch for that!!! You need a big compressor to maintain the flow. On a TS400 handle (long wrap-around) I gave up on air and plugged it into the garden hose (I have 90psi water pressure). Got totally SOAKED, but it went on. Almost a two man job of the longer installations. I'm just about to do my 088 handle... fun.

this may or may not work but we have used brake clean because it evaporates quick
but it might have a reaction with that rubber i have used it on other slip on grips and stuff like that
good luck

If anybody is looking for some new pistons for the 58mm bore/105.7cc Contra/Lightening I have a couple new in the box with pin and c- clips and rings that I am not going to use $25 a piece plus shipping, I had alot of parts for them but after building quite a few for my friends the parts supply is getting down

It VERY important on all tapered fits to throughly DEGREASE both the shaft and flywheel before fitting.

lakeside, i've pulled the flywheel off a ts 360 today and noted that the manual stressed the importance of this, why is that?

Because the lower frictional forces when greasy allow the flywheel to be pulled on further than allowed, creating excess stresses in the flywheel.

Be careful on the 361. It does not have an steel insert like a 360-pro, and has a cast key, like a big Weedeater...:D Stihl has had some problems and has sent out a tech note reducing the torque to 21.5 ft/lbs. Don't give it "a little more".
