Got this after wondering if questions of biodegradeabliity would hurt stored fuel or oil. I think Lakeside brought this up. Here is the response from STihl.Hope this is of some interest!!

We are in receipt of and thank you for your e-mail. I apologize for the slow response, but for your question, I had to do some research and consult with our product manager for lubricants. The following explanation is what I have found:

The oil will not degrade in the container. The degrading process begins once the oil is introduced into the environment and the elements i.e. rain, oxygen, sunlight, etc. trigger the degrading process.

The oil contains a fuel stabilizer to maintain fuel quality for several months (3 is a conservative figure).

Testing of Ultra in STIHL products shows excellent performance of the running life of the engine in other words no negative impact to the engine.

As long as you seal the container each time you use the oil, it will maintain its original properties for as long as seven years.

Thank you again for your e-mail.

Huh, a personal reply. Good info and better "feel good" that they took the time. Thanks for sharing.

Price of Ultra

A 6.4 ounce bottle costs $ 3.78 where I live. I am hoping for that price I get an increase in horsepower as well as good lubrication!:biggrinbounce2:

Wasn't me that brought it up... Looks like they have finally figured a response to the question. It keeps getting raised to Stihl because of the bio-degrading statement on the containers!

Most oxygenated fuels (e10 sort of but mostly MTBE and other aditives) do not add oxygen until they are burned so they should have no eefect on the oil and its breakdown process from an oxygen stand point how the additives interact with the oil is another story.

I also think the main point of the question to stihl was does the oil breakdown in the bottle once it is opened. You should avoid using gas older then 3 month old and in most cases 2 months old as the gas will break down on its own.

it is 10 percent ethanol (type of alcohol) and in some case will effect the seals and other rubber/plastic parts of the saw.

Best to try and stick to striaght gas but that is getting harder and harder as more states require additives in the gas. I have used it will not ill effects yet but if I can find a station with some non-E10 fuel I buy that instead

For $3.78 I can almost get a sixpack and 04Ultra. Not saying that Ultra is cheap, or that I want him in any off color way, but just saying that Ultra and a sixpack would be a better value.

Long live the "red stuff"

I laughed so hard, I started coughing and choking.

Dude, you may need to get help for that!!!

I tried to rep ya, but "have give too much rep in the last 24hrs."

Me thinks you are "shopping" at a different  store than I am....:jawdrop:

Nooooo, not me, I know which team I play on, no confusion here. Now, a real sixpack costs about twice that, but my comment was for illustration only. Now, I was trying to implicate 04Ultra as being cheap, not easy...or was it easy and not cheap...heck, who really cares, I was just trying to get a rise out of him.

Due to my marital status (married), I'm a non-practicing heterosexual...not by choice, on the "non-practicing" part that is. Any married man would be in about the same boat.

How does that go???

I wish I didn't know now, what I didn't know then!

What is so special about this stuff that they expect us to pay $ 3.78 for A 6.4 ounce bottle ?

It is full synthethtic and it's use in the two stroke and 4mix engines is leaving the internals virtually deposit free,,, Actually amazingly clean,,,but I agree it is a bit pricy??????????:pumpkin2:

All ester based oils have lousy protection from corrosion and from breaking down in the presence of moisture and oxygen. Thats in fact, why they biodegrade better.
With that said not all ester based oils have storage/protection issues. Thats because some have a effective additive package designed to combat the base oils weak points. Mobil MX2T(now 2R) is a fine example of this.
Time will tell if Ultra will have issues or not. I have purchased several gallons to test out and will report back when its finished.
