Hey guys... I have a couple of stihl questions. I got a Stihl MS 310 at my local saw shop:mad: Man I wish I had read up here first... Oh well Its a pretty good saw but a couple of things have been bothering me:
1. I think its running too lean even though I set the carb adjust to rich. The ???? thing keeps boggin down.
2. The ioler seems to work fine but once you start to cut the chain looks dry.

Any comments on how to fix this up:confused:

1) Don't adjust the carb rich. Get the guy at the place that sold it too you to adjust it. He'll do it free. If you adjust it wrong it could damge it over the long term. (Actually it's your saw, so I shouldn't say anything. You could be really good at adjusting carbs yourself. I'm not).

Anyway, the saw bogging down could be do to the fact that a 310 is not a huge huge saw. A foot diamiter log of hardwood could be too much for it in some cases.

Either that or there's something wrong with it. And if there is, then the people that sold it to you will no doubt look at it free of charge and do any repairs under warrenty.

2) Remove the bar and make sure the oiler hole is not plugged. If it is pick it out with something. Then run the saw at high rev and hold it over somthing where you can see if there's oil coming off of it. 30 seconds of this should spary off a little oily stripe on the ground.

The chain can look dry and that's perfectly alright. (As long as it isn't smoking or getting too hot to touch after hard use).

Well looks like the everything is fine now, I took the saw to the dealer and he adjusted the carb to get some more fuel in there to help with the high end torque. I also bought a replacement muffler and bored it out to 95% the size of the exhaust opening (replacement muffler just in case I have to send it to the factory for any repairs). I put some 93 octane and mixed it 45:1 cause its still breaking in, tossed the anti kickback chain and put in a full chisel.

The oiler "problem" was cause the 3' trunk I was felling was so full of resin that it clogged the oil feed port right up. I wont be cuttin those any more. Still a little dry for the wet drippy chain I was used to but still good enough to keep that bar and sprocket happy.
Now shes grindin away like nobody's business. I guess some more power is on the way as soon as she fully breaks in and the ideal 50:1 mix can be used.

You should like the 310, once it is broken in. Folks here say it is too heavy - and it might be. But, it works! I have a 18 inch bar on mine and it will walk through anything I put it into as long as the chain is sharp. In fact I use it often to quarter large rounds, so I can lift them.

Good luck with it!

Hal
