Well a few months ago I scored a very nice MS440 at a pawn shop. Well this past week I saw a CL ad for two stihl chainsaws. When I got there it was a MS310 and a MS460 that did not run. The price was very good so I bought both. Got them home and the first thing I did was pull the muffler on the 460. Clean as a whistle. So I then popped of the bar and chain cover at it had no clutch, sproket drum, plastic, nothing. Looking closely the oil pump and case around it was all aluminum in color and all pitted. There were even holes in the oil pump and everything looks like it is been eroded away. It looks like someone ran the saw with the chain brake on for a long, long time? I will have to post some pics.

Anyways so now I have a very nice low hour 440 and a very nice low hour 460 piston and cylinder. I need to check the compression but assuming it is good, 160+, I am thinking about building a hybrid.

I have done some searching and here is what I have read on what I need to make this work. First I am guessing I would need a new 440 gasket. I would then need to oval out the four bolt holes that hold on the cylinder. It looks like you oval them out towards the center of cylinder so it can be bolted on the 440 crankcase. Next you need to shave some of fins on the cylinder so it clears anything on the 440 crankcase that might be in its way. Next you need to get some spacers for the muffler where it mounts to the crankcase. I would then say pull the limiter caps on the carb and re-tune.

Aright I think that is it. Honestly I am still debateing on what to do. The 440 is so new that I am not sure I want to really mess with it other than a MM. But putting on the 460 P&C, haveing a spare 440 P&C sounds very appealing. Especially when I sell the 310 and basically get the 460 for nothing.

If there is thread on this I apologize. Just point me in the right direction and I will quit :deadhorse:.

I would think to get the most of doing that you would want to do some port work on the 460 jug. I'm sure it would make a difference with just swapping the jugs and a muffler mod.

You want a 460 gasket, then slot the holes. It's the 460 cylinder you need to seal, and 460 piston it needs to clear.

Thanks for that correction.

That 440 looks plumb wore out. Don't waste time messing with it - send it on to me and I will dispose of it properly.:hmm3grin2orange:

Brad what do you use for spacers on the muffler? I ordered a 460 top end for my brand new 440 so while its apart i can port both cylinders.
