A neighbor has a Stihl 180C that has been sitting a year or two and he wanted me to get it running. I got it running last week and now it wont run at all. I dont think he used it last week after I fixed it. I pulled the carb and it looks okay but it does not have adjustment screws. Should put a carb kit in it or is it something else?

The carbs on these saws are unfortunately non adjustable the good news is theyre cheap enough to just replace. It eliminates a lot to just replace. Check fuel line for cracks and leaks. Another thing my 180 takes quite a few pulls on full choke before it will pop, to many. As soon as I get mad and plane think its not gonna start it starts. I need to take it to the dealer cause it's still under warranty, it used to not be that way and it's well taken care. Just sayin u might want to give her a couple more pulls. May even try a small squirt of starting spray or a spritz of gas down the carby throat. Not much. Hope this helps.

Check the muffler screen. These saws are prone to clogging them. If that is okay remove the muffler to see if the piston is scored.

Pro saws are junk too when they don't start. Check for spark and compression.

Yeah saws can be a pain when they wont start. It is just that pro saws are easy to work on. Good spark and I have not pulled the muffler yet. But will in the morning

Play with the metering lever height until it works. I have found that on non-adjustable carbs, ideal running conditions can be achieved through setting the lever differently than specified.

But, if not, buy a Chinese fully-adjustable carb. The Chinese pay the cost of business (fines) to ship carbs that ignore emissions regulations over here. I think they're around $15 new.

Or get and 012 or something without the BS of a non-adjustable carb. While the weight is nice, it's easier to just get another saw than plug money into an 018 until it works as it should. Just get a McCulloch 10-series saw and a pair of gloves so that you forget it doesn't have antivibe. The total package should cost you around $30.

Just too try it out and see what would happen. I took an old spark plug and replaced the ms180's, wouldn't you know that thing acted like I just brought it home from the dealer. It fired within three pulls on choke then two more pulls and she fired right up. Just because it ran I thought the plug was fine. Hah sometimes it's the simplest things we over look. So maybe swap out the plug in your buddy's saw,it won't hurt a thing and at least it will eliminate the possibility.
Good luck. :)

If spark and compression are good, don't waste time trying to make the carb work. Just had one cross the bench today and a new factory carb was 30.77

Mess around for 20 minutes trying to make one work and you are in the hole.

This is not an accurate accounting for me when I'm at home anyway. I cannot seem to get anyone to pay me for fixing my own stuff, so equating it to my what would be my hourly wage at work is not correct. To come up with $30 I have to earn more than that, and then I have to give up something else I could have bought with it. I fix things all the time, and every thing I fix is something I don't have to pony up cash for.

I totally see your perspective, and at the same time sometimes when your helping a neighbor, they just need to realize everything is not fixable for free and sometimes you have to spend a few dollars.

I put in a new Chinese carburetor but can't tell if it works. What did I do wrong that the rope just pulls and rewinds like it's not connecting? The compression was fine before.

Take off the 4 screws and remove the starter and take a peek. You will need a T-27 torx tip tool.
Starter? Right next to the catalytic converter? I hope you meant the rope pull assembly used to start, or were you being funny?

I believe your question involves your starter, if the rope pulls out and retracts without engaging anything. So to be able to help you diagnose the problem, we need to see the inner side of your starter, as the problem is likely minor.

Thanks for the clarification, thought it was a hazing question. Took off cover and pawls came flying at my face. I can fix that. Will get back to together and see results.
