This is a stupid question, but I need to know for sure.

A buddy of mine is running a 25in bar on his ms 310. I checked stihls spec for that powerhead and it's maximum bar is listed at 20.

I know he doesn't need a bar that long for how little he uses it, but I'm wondering if there are any mechanical disadvantages to running too long a bar. ie, wasted rpm, excessive motor wear, etc.

I admit it looks sweet to have a huge bar but I think he should stay within specs and not sacrifice chainspeed or worse, equipment damage. Am I an idiot for thinking this way?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Too long bar

To my way of thinking, the principle disadvantabe of using a bar that is too long, is the increased probability of contacting a fixed object beyond the piece being cut, resulting in a kickback. If he's not cutting stuff greater than the 20 or so inches the saw is rated for, I can't see that any additional wear or loss of performance results. There is a little extra power loss because of the greater length of contact between the chain and bar, but that's probably negligible. If he is into cutting longer stuff, the chain speed will be decreased and stalling approached because of the additional load imposed by having more teeth cutting at once, but even this could be compensated for by not lowering the rakers as much, so that each tooth takes a smaller bite. It has been awhile, but as some what of a joke I had posted a vid of my 310 with 36" of skip chain in some 36" DBH Ponderosa Pine, asking what was wrong with my saw, as it sounded sick,,,,, a few members right away mentioned taking the bar off!

At the time, I just needed the bar, just got into a lot of huge wood.

There is a trick, running RSLKF chain and knocking the cutters down, and not touching the depth gauges intill your only running about .015 DG's,,, it will pretend to cut, but runs very hot regardless how rich you set it,,,,,,

Recommended "NO" , get away with it, "not for long" ,,, it was everything the motor-mounts had just to lift the bar.

25" of full comp chain would be about as severe as 36" of skip,,,, but I think it would be an interesting saw with 25" of skip,,,, still over-worked, but I would bet that it would fill a truck in no time?

thank you guys!

i reposted this thread in chainsaws! i'm still tring to get the ins and outs!

SHOERFAST! wheres that vid?
